U.S. Veteran

ALVIN A. VOLKERT, 91, of Quimby, Iowa passed away peacefully, Thursday morning, January 26, 2012 at the Cherokee Villa Nursing & Rehab Center in Cherokee, Iowa.

Funeral services will be held on Monday, January 30, 2012 at 10:30 a.m. at Pilgrim Lutheran Church in Quimby, Iowa. Pastor Don Meyer & Vicar Scot Kerns will officiate. Burial will be in Quimby Cemetery with military rites at the graveside by the Quimby American Legion. There will be a family prayer service at 10:15 a.m. Monday at the church. Visitation will be held on Sunday, January 29th at 11 a.m. until 8 p.m. with the family present from 2-4 p.m. at Boothby Funeral Home in Cherokee. Alvin was born on August 24, 1920 to Edmund & Alma (Keller) Volkert at Douglas Township rural Cushing, Iowa. He attended school in Douglas Township & Fielding through the 8th grade. He joined the U.S. Army on February 2, 1942 until he was honorably discharged on October 17, 1945. After arriving in France, he fought in Belgium, the Battle of the Bulge and across Germany until V-E Day, where he lost two tanks and was wounded. After returning to the U.S.A., he was awarded several medals, including the Purple Heart. Alvin was united in marriage on January 8, 1954 to Erma Tamm at Trinity Lutheran Church in Cherokee. He was a lifetime farmer and caretaker of three cemeteries for many years with Erma. He retired in 1990 and moved off the farm in 1996 to live in Quimby, Iowa. He was a member of Pilgrim Lutheran Church in Quimby where he served as an Elder, Treasurer, Finance Secretary and Sunday School Superintendent. He was also a member of the Washta American Legion and the 707th Tank Battalion Association. He enjoyed bowling, fishing, pool, horseshoes, playing cards, and taking the family to the Iowa Great Lakes.

He was preceded in death by his parents, brother Paul Volkert, daughter in law Theresa Volkert and three nephews.

Alvin is survived by his loving wife Erma of Quimby, Iowa; two sons: Ardell Volkert of Cherokee, Iowa; Larry Volkert of Cherokee, Iowa; 8 grandchildren: Steven (Emily) Volkert of Blair, Nebraska; Rebecca Carey and special friend Eric of Blair, Nebraska; Danny Volkert and special friend Christa of St. Roberts, Missouri; Travis (Natalia) Sipes of Waterloo, Iowa; Chad (Kendra) Mitchell of Cherokee, Iowa; Cory Volkert of Cherokee, Iowa; Nicholas Volkert of Cherokee, Iowa; Alexander Volkert of Cherokee, Iowa; 12 great grandchildren; 4 sisters: Wanda (Paul) Samuelson of Aurelia, Iowa; Freida (Wilbert) Vohs of Holstein, Iowa; Carolyn (Jim) Young of Galva, Iowa; Janet (Lorne) Hahn of Aurelia, Iowa; sister in law Barbara Volkert and her special friend Robert Compton of Cherokee, Iowa; also several nieces and nephews and many friends.
