ALBERT L. "BUD" LEONARD JR. , 79, of Cherokee, Iowa, passed away peacefully Wednesday morning, November 11, 2020 at his home.
Private family memorial services will be held on Saturday, November 14, at 1:30 p.m. at the Boothby Funeral Home in Cherokee, Iowa. Pastor Barb Dinelli will officiate. Burial of the cremains will be in the Silver Township Cemetery, rural Quimby, Iowa. Public visitation will be on Friday, November 13 th from 3 p.m. until 7 p.m. at the Boothby Funeral Home in Cherokee, Iowa. The family will not be present during the visitation but would like those attending to share a memory of Bud in a journal that will be provided or just bring one that you have already written and drop it in the basket by the register book. Online condolences can be left at www.boothbyfuneral.com The memorial service on Saturday will be live streamed on the Boothby Funeral Home website with the assistance of Fuller Digital Solutions. Please practice social distancing and masks will be required at the visitation and the memorial service.
Bud was born on November 17, 1940 at Storm Lake, Iowa to Luverne and Mildred (Goettsch) Leonard. He attended Arthur Public Schools and then graduated from Holstein High School in 1959. He was married to Saundra "Sandy" Wagner on March 4, 1961 at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Holstein, Iowa. He had farmed all his life until retiring in January of 1992 due to life altering health issues.
Bud was a very proud Eagle Scout in the Boy Scouts organization. He was a member of the Washta United Methodist Church, had served on the Willow School Board, and had been a member of the Quimby Lion's Club.
Bud was an avid outdoorsman; hunting, fishing and trapping whenever he could. He enjoyed politics, collecting coins and guns, playing craps, traveling and flying. He loved spending time with his family and was known for his Grit and determination.
He was preceded in death by his parents, a son Kim in 1965, sisters Janice Rupert and Carol Jean Schmidt.
He is survived by his wife Sandy of Cherokee, Iowa; two children: Val (John) Cedar of Cherokee, Iowa; Al (Stacy) Leonard of Medford, Wisconsin; 8 grandchildren; 12 great grandchildren with two more on the way in 2021; sister: Judy (Don) Hanson of Algona, Iowa; brothers-in-law: Terry Rupert of Lake City, Iowa; Roger Schmidt of Ida Grove, Iowa; sister-in-law: Marilyn (Dale) Ogle of Des Moines, Iowa; brother-in-law: John (Barbara) Wagner of Woodland, Virginia; uncle: Vernie Nicolaisen of Cherokee, Iowa; also several nieces, nephews and many cousins.
