Allen L. DeForest, 85, of Cherokee, Iowa, passed away Saturday evening, July 24, 2021 in the Cherokee Specialty Care.
Memorial services will be held on Thursday July 29, 2021 at 2 p.m. at the Boothby Funeral Home in Cherokee, Iowa. Pastor Jean Morse will officiate. Burial of the cremains will be in the Cherokee Memory Gardens. There will be a family prayer service at 1:45 p.m. on Thursday at the funeral home. Visitation with the family present will be from 12:30 p.m. until service time on Thursday at the Boothby Funeral Home. The service will be livestreamed with the assistance of Fuller Digital Solutions on the Boothby Funeral Home website. Online condolences may be left at www.boothbyfuneral.com.
Allen was born on August 7, 1935 in Sioux City, Iowa to Manuel and Lucille (Baker) DeForest. He attended school in Newell, Iowa. He was married to Doris Miller on June 15, 1957.
He worked for the Hartley Creamery for a number of years, worked as a farm hand on various farms, drove truck for Louck's Trucking in Cherokee for several years, and drove truck for Ames and Bass Trucking in Marcus for many years. He later drove mini bus for the Siouxland Regional Transit System in Cherokee.
Allen was a member of the Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Cherokee. He loved to watch the Iowa Hawkeyes football and basketball teams and enjoyed playing lawn darts.
He was preceded in death by his parents, an infant sister Diana Dee DeForest, father-in-law and mother-in-law Carl and Lila Miller, sisters-in-law, Audrey DeForest, Annette DeForest, and Pat DeForest, brother-in-law Ronald Miller and his wife Rose, and nephew Wade DeForest.
Allen is survived by his wife Doris of Cherokee, Iowa,; two children: Craig (Darla) DeForest of Mason City, Iowa; Shari (Mark) Dunn of Cherokee, Iowa; four grandchildren: Brent Dunn (Mallory) of Ames, Iowa; Alissa (Alex) Hammond of Cherokee, Iowa,; Raela (Rob) Eland of Boone, Iowa; and Emily Hartkopp of Mason City, Iowa; eight great-grandchildren: Abby, Skylar, Mason, Stella, Loretta, Alivia, Windsor, and Murphy; three brothers, his twin Alvin DeForest of Lyons, Georgia; Delbert DeForest of Portsmouth, Rhode Island; Richard DeForest of Riverside, California; one sister and brother-in-law: Bonnie (Darrel) Hinkeldey of Storm Lake, Iowa; brother-in-law and sisters-in-law Dale (Lana) Miller of Columbus, North Carolina; Allen (Joanna) Miller of Independence Missouri; and several nieces and nephews.
