Obituary

BERNA A. JENNESS, 78, of Cherokee, Iowa passed away Wednesday, October 16, 2013 at the Mercy Medical Center in Sioux City following a brief illness.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, October 19th, at 10:30 a.m. at St. Paul's United Methodist Church in Cherokee, Iowa. Rev. Magrey deVega will officiate. Burial will be in Oak Hill Cemetery in Cherokee. There will be a family prayer service at 10:15 a.m. at the Church on Saturday. Visitation will be from 11 a.m. until 8 p.m. on Friday at the Boothby Funeral Home in Cherokee with the family present from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. On line condolences may be sent to boothbyfuneral.com.

Berna was born December 25, 1934, at Moville, Iowa to Ernest J. and Anne (West) Miller. She attended country schools and Cushing school through her sophomore year. She attended Wilson High School in Cherokee her junior and senior year, graduating in 1953. She was married to Clarence Naslund on June 12, 1953. In that union they had four children; Connie, Gary, Bryan and Kevin. She was later married to Howard Jenness on December 30, 1961. Joining in that relationship was Debbie and together they had Pam and Penny. Berna lived in Cherokee most of her life. In the late 70's she lived in Missouri for three years owning and operating two fabric stores in Forsyth and Branson. While living in Cherokee, she was the Business Manager/Board Secretary for the Cherokee Community School District for 21 years, retiring in 1999. Her most recent employment was working part time for Johnson Machine Shop as bookkeeper and sharing the duties as a co-owner of Town & Country Laundromat.

Berna was a member of St. Paul's United Methodist Church, BPW, Work Activity Center, serving on their Board, and several church committees. Berna's passion was spending time with her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. Her many talents included quilting, sewing, woodworking and painting. She judged sewing and crafts at many of the local county fairs. She enjoyed playing the piano and the accordion. Berna sewed numerous wedding garments for her family. Quilts she made were often gifts she gave for special occasions. She shared her many talents with her family.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Howard, a son Bryan Naslund, a daughter Connie Farmer and a sister Lola Miller.

She is survived by her children; Debbie (Dave) Dunn of Cherokee, Iowa; Gary (Jane) Naslund of Kearney, Nebraska; Kevin (Tandra) Naslund of Cherokee, Iowa; Pam (Mike) Ives of Colorado Springs, Colorado; Penny Harding of Kearney, Nebraska; a son-in-law Phillip Farmer of Wichita, Kansas; her K-9 companion Dori; 19 grandchildren, 39 great grandchildren, 3 great great grandchildren; her siblings; Rev. Marvin (Betty) Miller of Storm Lake, Iowa; Robert Miller of Tekamah, Nebraska; Daniel (Melva) Miller of Primghar, Iowa; Ben (Mary Ellen) Miller of Axtell, Nebraska; Mary (John) Dallmann of Tekamah, Nebraska; and many nieces and nephews.
