Ellen Bernice McIntosh, the daughter of Emery and Mary (Zembsch) Goodrich, was born on August 31, 1922, in Cleghorn, Iowa. She graduated from Cleghorn High School in 1940, participating in activities such as cheerleading and providing piano accompaniment in the Music department. She was a 4-year first team forward on the inaugural girls' basketball team, and was selected as honorary captain in her senior year.

After high school, Bernice attended National Business Training School in Sioux City, and then was employed at the Cudahay Packing Plant. She also worked in the office of Booth Fisheries, and at The Battery, making Ray-O-Vac batteries for the war. She and a high school friend spent the summer of 1945 in New York/New Jersey, employed at Harborside Terminal and enjoying the sights of New York.

On January 27, 1946, she married the love of her life, her high school sweetheart, Lyle McIntosh. They moved to the McIntosh family farm east of Cleghorn, where they raised three children. After 59 years of marriage, Lyle passed away on March 2, 2005, leaving a big void in her life.

Bernice was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Cleghorn for 83 years, where she was president of the Martha Society and a member of the Friendship Guild. She and Lyle served three terms as Skippers of the Mariners couples' group. She served on the committee to remodel/redecorate the church sanctuary in 1972. Bernice was the church pianist for six years and organist for 63 years, retiring in February 2018. She always enjoyed playing organ/piano duets with son Neal whenever he was home.

Bernice actively supported Meriden-Cleghorn Community School activities, serving as President of the PTC (Parent Teacher Conference) and as Vice President of the Music Boosters. She was an original member of the Board of the Cleghorn Community Center, serving as Secretary for 9 years.

Bernice was a proud member of the C. Adrian Olson Unit of the American Legion Auxiliary, where she held multiple unit offices, including serving as Treasurer from 1984 until 2 weeks before her death. She served one year as Cherokee County President.

Bernice also served her community as a 4-H leader and as a Den Mother for Cub Scout Pack 109. She catered dinners for the Cleghorn Lions Club for 34 years. She was the Chairman of the Auxiliary History Book Committee, which created "A Century on the Right Track", the book published for the 1990 Cleghorn centennial. She spent many months researching, compiling and editing the histories of the town and families included in the publication. She was recognized with Community Service awards from the City of Cleghorn and from the DAR.

Bernice reported Cleghorn area news for Cherokee newspapers for 30 years. She was a correspondent and columnist for the Marcus News since 1974, during which time she also was employed for 12 years as a copy typist.
