BETSY L. CHRISTENSEN, 97, of Cherokee, Iowa, passed away Tuesday evening, June 14, 2016 in the Sunset Knoll Care & Rehab Center in Aurelia, Iowa.
Memorial services will be held on Tuesday, June 21st, at 10:30 a.m. at the Memorial Presbyterian Church in Cherokee, Iowa. Rev. Eric Wright will officiate. Burial of the cremains will be in the Oak Hill Cemetery at Cherokee, Iowa. There will be no visitation. The Boothby Funeral Home in Cherokee, Iowa is assisting the family with the arrangements. Betsy was born on January 31, 1919 at Chicago, Illinois to Harold & Ethel (Davidson) Heywood. She graduated from Mechanicsville High School in 1936 and then attended Tipton Junior College for one year. She was married to Norman H. Meyer on June 17, 1939 at Mechanicsville, Iowa. They lived in Reinbeck, Iowa from 1939 til 1942 and then moved to Cherokee. Betsy had worked at the Cherokee Mental Health Institute for 17 years as a supervisor of patient care. Her husband Norman passed away in 1975 and she was later married to Andrew "Dan" Christensen on December 27, 1976 at Lake Tahoe, Nevada. Dan passed away on November 7, 2001. She was a member of the Memorial Presbyterian Church. Betsy enjoyed going on picnics, playing cards, cooking, and blackjack.
She was preceded in death by her two husbands, a son Gary L. Meyer, and a grandson Aaron D. Becker.
She is survived by her daughter: Angy J. (Russ) Becker of Cherokee, Iowa; three step-sons: John (Stacey) Christensen of Omaha, Nebraska; Clark Christensen of Okoboji, Iowa; Don (Rachel) Christensen of St. Paul, Minnesota; 9 grandchildren; 8 great grandchildren; a half-sister: Barbara Ann Finley of Rogers, Arkansas.
