Betty was born on August 7, 1943 in Cherokee, Iowa to Reginald and Ellar (Drake) Martin. She graduated from Cherokee High School and pursued a career in business and later graduated from Sioux City Business School in 1963. She worked for Peoples Finance until 1969. Much to her family's delight, she returned home later that year and worked for the Cherokee Regional Medical Center from 1969 until her retirement 38 years later in 2007. During that time, she held many positions in the business and finance department including Controller, CFO, and Director of Accounting. At the time of her retirement, she was the Home Health, Hospice Department secretary.
Betty was a very faithful and active member of Cherokee First Church of Christ for nearly all her life. She was a contact person for the Prayer Chain and the head organizer of the church card ministry. She was a regular member of most Ladies Groups, including the Thursday Ladies Bible Study and the Esther Circle. Missions were her real passion. In her younger adulthood, she was talked into teaching a Sunday School class. Although she was hesitant at first, she soon fell in love with teaching kids. Betty was always the "go-to" person for providing food for any occasion, including Bible Buddies snacks and funeral luncheons. She had this special bowl she provided with her food and it was such a unique shade of orange that everyone knew it was hers and its contents were always delicious.
She enjoyed knitting/crocheting, spending time with family and friends, reading cookbooks/recipes, and most recently keeping up with family and friends on Facebook.
She was preceded in death by her dear parents, a precious sister Helen (Harold) Dittmer and two brothers she adored, Harold "Sonny" (Phyllis) and Jim (Gerry) Martin.
Betty is survived by her ten nieces and nephews; Gary (Ronda) Martin of Holstein, IA, Kevin Martin of Holstein, IA, Kenny (Vicki) Martin of Suffolk, VA, Dawn (Rick) Darden of Windsor, VA, Richard (Linda) Martin of Suffolk, VA, Robert (Tammy) Martin of Raleigh, NC, Dixie Meyer of Valliant, OK, Donald Dittmer of Omaha, NE, Bruce (Sandy) Dittmer of Nevada, IA, and Barry (Brenda) Dittmer of Hinton, IA. Eighteen great nieces and nephews and twenty-one great, great nieces and nephews.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the First Church of Christ.
