Bonnie was born on April 19, 1942 to George and Doris (Harris) Berger at Dakota County, Nebraska. She attended Hileman Country School and graduated from Dakota City High School in 1959. Bonnie attended Wayne State Teacher's College and graduated from Buena Vista College in 1988 with a Bachelor's Degree in Elementary Education. She began her teaching career teaching elementary grades in O'Neil, Nebraska and then in Sutherland. Bonnie was a valued substitute teacher for 30 years in both the Cherokee and South O'Brien School districts.
She was united in marriage to Dennis Ducommun on April 4, 1964 at the Sutherland Church of Christ, together they had three children, Lisa, Diane, and Daryl. They lived and farmed North of Larrabee until they moved to Cherokee in 1997.
For the past many years, Bonnie has led the charge to bring the Lily of the Valley Country School to Cherokee and coordinated the refurbishing of it and teaching the Cherokee County third graders of its history. Each student left with a scarf or bonnet sewn by Bonnie and her colleagues with the local retired teachers association. Bonnie and Dennis loved going together to classic car shows, participating in parades and driving in classic car caravan road trips.
She was passionate about Republican politics and anyone who knew her, knew that because of her involvement at the local and state level. She was a member of the Republican Women of Iowa. When they were in the cattle business, Bonnie worked tirelessly for the local and state Cattlewoman's Association promoting the beef industry. She brought her knowledge of the farming industry as a 4H leader to local youth. She was the meal maker, bookkeeper, and parts retriever for Bar D Bar Farms.
Bonnie's faith was unwavering, leading her to teach Sunday School. She also led VBS classes and participated in Lamplighter's women's group. Next to her Lord, family was most important. Bonnie was a member of the Church of Christ. She attended every church and school function for her grandkids, no matter how far away. She loved planning family get togethers and cherished any chance to spend time with them. She loved her kids fervently and they always knew she was there for them.
Bonnie was preceded in death by her parents, George and Doris Berger, sisters and brothers-in-law, Lola and Len Johnson and Judy and Doug Smith, brother, Bill Berger, father-in-law and mother-in-law, Delmar and Daisy Ducommun, and sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Robert and Donita Barnes.
