Obituary

CALVIN J. HUSMAN, 81, of rural Quimby, Iowa, passed away Sunday afternoon, March 15, 2015 in the Cherokee Regional Medical Center.

Funeral services will be held on Thursday, March 19th at 11 a.m. at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Cherokee. Pastor Jon Riggert will officiate. Burial will be in the Quimby Cemetery. There will be a family prayer service at 10:45 a.m. at the church on Thursday. Visitation will be on Wednesday from 2 p.m. until 8 p.m. with the family present from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. at the Boothby Funeral Home in Cherokee. Cal was born on August 26, 1933 near Hinton, Iowa to John & Claribell (Pearson) Husman Sr. He graduated from Quimby High School in 1952. He was married to Virginia Galvin on March 21, 1954 at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Cherokee, Iowa. He served in the Iowa National Guard for 7 years in the 133rd Infantry Division. He played baseball, even after high school on "Town Teams" and also played fast pitch softball for several years. He coached Little League Baseball for several years. Cal took great pride in farming all his life. He never wanted a cockle burr to go to seed. He received the Farmer of the Year Award from the Soil Conservation Commission in 1989. He was a member of the Trinity Lutheran Church in Cherokee where he had served on several church committees; taught Sunday School for many years; was active in the Trinity Youth Group and raised sweet corn for them for over 40 years. He belonged to the Quimby Lions Club and received the Warren Coleman Award. Cal had been on the Willow School Board and had also served as Booster Club President. He had been a Rock Township Trustee. Cal enjoyed hunting and fishing and was always interested in helping young people. He especially loved his grandchildren, following them in all their activities.

He was preceded in death by his parents, a sister JoAnn Schmidt, mother-in-law & father-in-law Ruby & Ben Galvin, brother-in-law Jim Galvin and his wife Joyce, sister-in-law Marjorie Krier, brother-in-law Joe Stratton, and nephew Aaron Steffen.

He is survived by his wife Virginia of Quimby, Iowa; four children: Brenda Husman of Sioux City, Iowa; Brad (Deanna) Husman of Quimby, Iowa; Bruce (Cindy) Husman of Quimby, Iowa; Beth (Larry) Banwart of Mt. Vernon, Iowa. Cal was "Farmer" grandpa to 8 grandchildren, 4 boys and 4 girls and one great grandson; three brothers and one sister: Wilfred (Bonnie) Husman of Marcus, Iowa; John (Amy) Husman of Spirit Lake, Iowa; Ronald (Maritta) Husman of Sioux Falls, South Dakota; Rosemary (Kell) Steffen of Spencer, Iowa; two brothers-in-law: John Schmidt of San Antonio, Texas; Ken Krier of McCook Lake, South Dakota; a sister-in-law Mary Stratton of Ames, Iowa; also several nieces, nephews, and many friends.
