Obituary

L. CHARLENE PETERSON, 91, of Cherokee and former Aurelia, Iowa resident, went home to be with her Lord on Tuesday evening, January 10, 2017 in Accura Healthcare of Cherokee.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, January 14th, at 10:30 a.m. at the First Church of Christ in Cherokee, Iowa. Pastor Tom Lewis will officiate. Burial will be in the Oak Hill Cemetery at Cherokee. There will be a family prayer service at 10:15 a.m. at the church on Saturday. Visitation will be on Friday from 11 a.m. until 7 p.m. with the family present from 5 p.m. until 7 p.m. at the Boothby Funeral Home in Cherokee.. Charlene was born January 21, 1925 at the family farm in Silver Township, Cherokee County, Iowa to Abraham & Leora (Stewart) Hahn. She attended country school and graduated from Aurelia, High School in 1942. She then attended Commercial Extension Business School in Omaha, Nebraska. Charlene was married to Donald D. Peterson on November 30, 1945 at the Mt. Olive Baptist in rural Cherokee, Iowa. They were blessed with three daughters, Marcia, Kathy, and Shari. She worked as a bookkeeper for several businesses, including Peterson Motors, Holzhauer Motors, Dorr Implement, and later worked at WalMart in Storm Lake for several years, retiring in 1995. Charlene was a member of the First Church of Christ in Cherokee where she had served as a trustee, banker and treasurer over the years. She also belonged to the Homemaker Circle and the General Federated Women's Club in Aurelia, Iowa. She enjoyed reading, camping, gardening, fishing, playing cards, bike riding with her granddaughters and spending time with family.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Donald on November 7, 2006, her parents-in-law Richard and Hazel Peterson, sisters Florence Bruce and her husband Clifford, Lucille Cox and her husband John, a brother Gerald Hahn, a sister in infancy, brother-in- law Gordy Grohe and a nephew Dennis Bruce.

She is survived by her three daughters: Marcia (Mark) Casey of Cherokee, Iowa; Kathy (Steve) Magnussen of Murfreesboro, Tennessee; Shari (Marty) Eldredge of Cherokee, Iowa; four grandchildren: Brad And Matthew Herwig, Laci (Tim) Crabtree, and Lindsay Gustafson; two great grandchildren: Michael Herwig and Makenna Gustafson; sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law: Nona Grohe of Aurelia, Iowa; Donna Hahn of Cherokee, Iowa; Jon (Rhonda) Peterson of Cherokee, Iowa; several cousins including: Delores Clymens of Aurelia, Iowa; Bob (Mary) Hahn of Cherokee, Iowa; Janet Hahn of Aurelia, Iowa.
