Obituary

DARRELL E. REED, 89, of Norfolk, Nebraska, formerly of Cherokee, Iowa, passed away Sunday morning, April 29, 2012 at the Faith Regional Hospital in Norfolk.

Funeral services will be held on Friday, May 4th, at 10 a.m. at the First Church of Christ in Cherokee, Iowa. Pastor Gregg Johnson and Pastor Tom Lewis will officiate. There will be a family prayer service at 9:45 a.m. at the church on Friday. Burial will be in the Oak Hill Cemetery at Cherokee with military rites by L.A. Wescott Post #2253 of the V.F.W. Visitation will be on Thursday from 11 a.m. until 8 p.m. with the family present from 6:30 p.m. until 8 p.m. at the Boothby Funeral Home in Cherokee, Iowa. Darrell was born in Cherokee, Iowa on October 2, 1922 to Donald and Carrie Reed. He was a graduate of Wilson High School, Cherokee. Darrell was a hard worker with occupations that included ice cream maker at the Cherokee Creamery, theatre projectionist at the American and Arrow theaters, custodian at Cherokee State Bank and the Cherokee Community Center as well as part-time grounds keeper at Oak Hill Cemetery. He was married to LaVonne Lindley on December 20, 1943 at Sioux Falls, South Dakota. Darrell loved his God, his country and his family. He served as an Elder, Deacon and treasurer at First Church of Christ in Cherokee. A proud WWII veteran, Darrell was based in Tibenham, England where he was radio operator on a B24-Liberator. He and his 9 man crew flew 22 missions. At the time of his discharge, he had attained the rank of T SGT. Darrell's crew remained a close-knit group and held reunions every two years starting in the 1990's. The final get together was in 2005 at the WWII Memorial in Washington, D.C. He was a member of the V.F.W. and enjoyed wood working.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Lavonne on April 25, 2008, sister Doraine Murrel, brother Jim Reed and a brother in infancy Harry.

Darrell is survived by his daughter: Sherrill Glandt and husband Larry of Norfolk, Nebraska; son: Shannon Reed and wife Lou Ann of Wayne, Nebraska; granddaughter: Teena Andersen and husband Rod of Pilger, Nebraska; grandson: Darren Glandt and wife Lisa of Omaha, Nebraska and great granddaughters Hayley & Alyssa Andersen of Pilger, Nebraska and Marcia Glandt of Omaha; a brother Beryl Reed of Cherokee.
