DARRELL D. "ROCKY" WEILAND, 79,of Cherokee, Iowa, passed away Thursday morning, May 3, 2018 in the Mercy Medical Center in Sioux City, Iowa.
Memorial services will be held on Tuesday, May 8 th , at 10:30 a.m. at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Cherokee, Iowa. Pastor Jon Riggert will officiate. Burial will be at a later date. There will be military rites at the church on Tuesday by L.A. Wescott Post #2253 of the V.F.W. Visitation will be on Monday from 3 p.m. until 7 p.m. with the family present from 5 p.m. until 7 p.m. at the Boothby Funeral Home in Cherokee, Iowa. Darrell was born on March 1, 1939 at Canistota, South Dakota to Earl & Lois (Tarrell) Weiland. He attended Larrabee, Marcus and Quimby Schools. He served in the U. S. Navy from 1956 until 1960 on the aircraft carrier USS Saratoga, working on the flight deck. He was married to Diane Joy on June 9, 1962 at Quimby, Iowa. They had lived in Cherokee since 1962. Darrell had worked at several grocery stores, spent over 40 years at Tysons, retiring in April of 2012 and was custodian at the Sanford Museum for over 25 years. He was member of the Trinity Lutheran Church. He enjoyed collecting sports cards, plants, bird watching, watching westerns and mostly time spent with his family.
He was preceded in death by his parents Earl Weiland and Lois Weiland Roach, his in-laws Loren & Mildred Joy, his brother and sister-in-law Ronny and Colleen Weiland, sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law Teeny Weiland, Doris and Cliff Carlson and Ronald Conley.
He is survived by his wife, Diane, four children: Scott Weiland of Hinton, Iowa; Tara (Mike) Johnson of Spencer, Iowa; Stacy (Erin) Weiland of Hinton, Iowa; Mandy Weiland of Omaha, Nebraska; 11 grandchildren: Brittany (Nick), Cullen, Mallory, Isaac, Abby, Keegan, Caden, Hadley, McKenna, Kyleigh, Alyssia; 2 great grandchildren: Karson and Emersyn; 3 brothers, Gene Weiland of Cherokee, Iowa; Jerry (Maddy) Weiland of Bloomfield Connecticut, Wayne (Kathy) Weiland of South Sioux City, Nebraska, a sister-in-law Donna Conley of Cherokee, Iowa; also many nieces and nephews.
