DEAN SMITH, 79, of Cherokee, Iowa passed away Wednesday, September 24, 2014 at Countryside Estates in Cherokee, Iowa
A public visitation will be on Friday, September 26th, from 3 p.m. until 8 p.m. at the Boothby Funeral Home in Cherokee, Iowa with the family present from 6 p.m. until 7:30 p.m. Pastor Jane Johnston will officiate. Dean was born October 19, 1934 in Cherokee, Iowa to Lewis R. and Muriel (Sutton) Smith. He attended Cherokee schools, graduating from Wilson High School in 1953. He received a B.A. Degree in business from Buena Vista College in Storm Lake. He served in the U. S. Air Force from 1954 until 1958, serving as an Airman 1st Class. He was married to Janet Benedict on May 15, 1959 in Cherokee, Iowa. He worked for Swanson Grocery Stores from 1959 until 1969 when they merged with Hy-Vee. He became a buyer for Hy-Vee working from 1969 until his retirement in May of 1990. He was a member of St. Paul's United Methodist Church, Speculative Lodge #307 A.F. & A.M, the Abu-Bekr Shrine Temple in Sioux City, was a member of the Shrine Camper's Unit and the Cherokee Shrine Club. He enjoyed camping, fishing and time spent with family.
He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers Robert in 1971, Gary in 2010 and an infant sister Sandra kay Smith in 1941.
He is survived by his wife, Janet, his three children; Debbie Knowles of Bode, Iowa, Steve (Summer) Smith of Benton City, Washington, Linda Khodeir of Cherokee, Iowa; 9 grandchildren, Jeremy Smith, Heather Carter, Keesha and Kenny Knowles, Logan Houser, Christie Irish, Corey Speer, Amanda Kuzn and Ben Smith, 19 great grandchildren.
