Obituary

DON W.  VETTER , 88, of Larrabee, Iowa, passed away  Tuesday morning, September 25, 2018 at  Accura Healthcare in  Cherokee, Iowa.

Memorial services will be held on Saturday, October 6 th , at 10:30 a.m. at the Boothby Funeral Home in Cherokee, Iowa. Pastor Robin Thomas will officiate. Burial will be in the Silver Lake Cemetery at Lake Park, Iowa at a later date. There will be military rites at the funeral home following the service. Visitation will be on Friday October 5 th , from 3 p.m. until 7 p.m. with the family present from 5 p.m. until 7 p.m. at the Boothby Funeral Home in Cherokee, Iowa. Don was born February 22, 1930 at Lake Park, Iowa to Paul & Agnes (Swanson) Vetter. He graduated from Lake Park Consolidated High School in 1947. He then attended Buena Vista college in Storm Lake, Iowa. He was married to Lois Zahren on December 26, 1948 at Lake Park, Iowa.  Don served in the Korean War from January 8, 1952 until January 8, 1954 being honorably discharged as a Sergeant.

Don worked for the Farmers Coop Elevator in Odeboldt, Iowa from 1947 – 1957 and then in Larrabee from 1957 until Dec.. 31, 1989. He then went to work for the U.S. Post Office in Larrabee from 1993 until his retirement in 2005. He was a member of the Larrabee United Methodist Church and sang in the church choir for many years. He was a longtime member of the Larrabee Fire Department, serving as Fire Chief for many years. Don enjoyed anything music related; going to concerts, jazz band contests, municipal band concerts, listening to Big Band music and going to symphony orchestras.

He was preceded in death by his parents, infant twin sons Wesley & Leslie on April 7, 1953; sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law Bonnie Vetter of Spencer, Iowa; Herma & Glenn Hensley of Baldwin, Wisconsin; Cecil & Ellen Zahren of Lake Park, Iowa.

He is survived by his wife Lois of 69 years; four children: Carolyn (Bernard) Kastein of Springfield, South Dakota; Lisa Vetter of Storm Lake, Iowa; Wesley (Ruth) Vetter of Cherokee, Iowa; Thomas (LeAnn) Vetter of Cedar Falls, Iowa; 6 grandchildren: Brandon Kastein, Lyndsey Kastein, Dr. Carrie Kastein and her fiancé Dr. Adrian Ptacek, Kayla Vetter, Alec Vetter, and Ailish Vetter; one brother Gene Vetter of Spencer, Iowa; brother-in-law: Gerald (Jana) Zahren of Lake Park, Iowa; also many nieces, nephews and cousins.
