DONALD L. SMITH, 86, of Sioux City, Iowa and former long- time Washta and Correctionville, Iowa area resident passed away Saturday, October 12, 2013 at his home in Sioux City, Iowa.
Memorial services will be held on Wednesday, October 16th at 10:30 a.m. at the Boothby Funeral Home in Cherokee, Iowa. Pastor Barb Dinelli will officiate. There will be a flag presentation at the funeral home by L. A. Wescott Post #2253 of the V.F.W during the memorial service. Burial will be at Sunset View Cemetery at Washta, Iowa. There will be a family prayer service 10:15 a.m. at the funeral home on Wednesday. Donald was born September 19, 1927 at Belle, Missouri to Alva James Smith and Birgie (Mitchem) Smith. He attended schools in Belle, Missouri and graduated from Akron, Iowa in 1945. He served in the U. S. Coast Guard during World War II, attaining the rank of Storekeeper Third Class. He was married to Pauline Godfrey on October 12, 1947 at Washta, Iowa.
Don appeared on the television show "What's My Line" for owning Smith Pig Hatchery. He was a hard-working man and spent most of his life developing and advancing Smith Feed Yards. Eventually, he did feed cattle in six states and earned notoriety in the Farm Journal Magazine for his success in farming. A New York motion picture company made a short film about the feed yard operation which aired as a preview to movies in theaters. Visitors from around the world toured the operation to learn about cattle feeding and farming. Don was honored by First Bank of Omaha, Nebraska as a long-time customer for the business account.
While farming, they went on family vacations to various Midwestern and Western states. After retirement they traveled to England to visit Pauline's father's birthplace and also traveled to Australia, Alaska and South America.
He was preceded in death by his parents and two sons Duane Smith in 1996 and James Smith in 2012.
He is survived by his wife, Pauline, and two daughters; Loretta Powell and her husband Jack of Phoenix, Arizona; Lois Ramaekers and her husband Bruce of Sioux City, Iowa; two daughters-in-law; Marlene Smith Ebert and her husband Jim of Marcus, Iowa and Jolene Smith of Correctionville, Iowa; 12 grandchildren, 16 great grandchildren; a sister Norma June Collins of Rifle, Colorado.
