DONALD KEITH MUMMERT, 85, of rural Aurelia, Iowa passed away Thursday morning, April 6th, 2017 at the Mercy Medical Center in Sioux City, Iowa surrounded by his loving family.
Funeral services will be held on Monday, April 10th, at 10: 30 a.m. at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Cherokee. Pastor Jon Riggert will officiate. Burial will be at Pleasant Hill Cemetery at Aurelia. There will be military rites at the cemetery. There will be a family prayer at 10:15 a.m. at the church on Monday. Visitation will be on Sunday from 11 a.m. until 6 p.m. with the family present from 4 p.m. until 6 p.m. at the Boothby Funeral Home in Cherokee, Iowa. Donald was born September 11, 1931 on the family farm in Afton Township, Aurelia, Iowa to Burt and Leone (Burgess) Mummert. He was baptized in the Congregational Church in Aurelia. He was confirmed at Trinity Lutheran Church in Cherokee. He graduated from Aurelia Community School in 1949. Don enlisted in the U. S. Marine Corp and served as a metalsmith from 1952 until 1954. He married Jeanette Rebhuhn, the love of his life, on June 3, 1956 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Cherokee. To this union five children were born. Don farmed all his life and was good steward of the land. He enjoyed hunting and fishing with his son Doug and grandson Skyler. Through the years he raised sheep, cattle, hogs and had many horses.
Don was an active member of his community. He had served on the Aurelia School Board, was an Afton Township Trustee, served different capacities in the American Legion including post commander and also served in the Color Guard for many years and helped out in the V.F.W. Color Guard when needed. He enjoyed spending time with his wife, children, grandchildren and visiting with others wherever he went.
He was preceded in death by his parents, sister and brother-in-law Jeanne & Jim Heuer; father-in-law and mother-in-law Gus and Katie Rebhuhn; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law Clarence Rebhuhn, Doreen & Royal Pitchers, Marie & Robert Janssen, Kenneth Rebhuhn, Marge & Kenny Sundberg, and nephews Blair Newlon, Jimmy & Jeff Sundberg a niece Jeanne Stellish and several aunts and uncles.
He is survived by his wife Jeanette, and five children; Debra (Michael) Estes of Traer, Iowa; DeAnn (Scott) Parsons of Waterloo, Iowa; Tamara (David) Eisenshenk of Farmington, MN, Ronald (Jan) Mummert of Spencer, Iowa, Douglas (Tamie) Mummert of Cherokee, Iowa; grandchildren; Stephen (fiancé) Annie Chong) Estes, Adrienne Estes, Adam Parsons, Brite (Lisa) Woodruff, Ryan (fiancé) Kait Savoy) Parsons, Christian Woodruff, Devarae (Shane) Mourning) Bender, Skyler (Tori Maymon) Mummert, McKenna (Nolan Martin) Mummert; great grandsons Ehren Woodruff, Roman Mourning, Benjamin Maymon, great granddaughter Haiden Mummert, sister-in-law Lorna Rebhuhn of Webster City, Iowa also many nieces, nephews, cousins and dear friends.
