Obituary

DORIS ELAINE (LUNDELL) SHAFER, 89, of Marcus, Iowa and former longtime Cleghorn area resident, passed away Monday afternoon, December 15, 2014 at the Heartland Care Center at Marcus, Iowa.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, December 20th, at 2 p.m. at the Oakdale Evangelical Free Church, rural Meriden, Iowa. Pastor Clint Hogrefe will officiate. Burial will be prior to the service at 12:30 p.m. on Saturday at the Liberty Cemetery, north of Meriden. There will be a family prayer service on Saturday at 1:45 p.m. at the church Visitation will be on Friday from 2 p.m. until 8 p.m. at the Boothby Funeral Home in Cherokee with the family present from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. On line condolences may be left at www.boothbyfuneral.com

Doris was born July 5, 1925 at Cleghorn, Iowa to Ernest and Elvera (Carlson) Lundell. She graduated from Cleghorn High School in the class of 1943 and went on to a year of study at Buena Vista College. She married LaVerne Shafer on August 29, 1944 at Cleghorn, Iowa. She was a support to LaVerne in his farming and business ventures as they lived in the Cleghorn community all of their lives. She was a member of the Oakdale Evangelical Free Church. Doris was involved for many years in teaching Sunday School, Vacation Bible School, White Cross,
4-H, and could usually be heard sharing a word of encouragement or reading a carefully-selected poem at women's gatherings or showers. Her life leaves a cherished legacy of loving commitment to our family, Oakdale Church, and to God.

She was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, a son-in-law Gordon A. Anderson, a brother-in-law Ralph Shafer, brother and sister-in-law Richard and Mary Lundell.

She is survived by her four children: Larry Shafer and his wife Sue of Plymouth, Minnesota; Beverly Skarulis and her husband Frank of Buffalo Grove, Illinois; Joleen Anderson of Rembrandt, Iowa; Karl Shafer of Palm Springs, California; 7 grandchildren: Emily Shafer, Drew (Jammie) Shafer, Brett Shafer, Eric (Amanda) Shafer, Jason Anderson, Rebekah Anderson, David Skarulis; 4 great-grandchildren: William, Calvin, Aviel and Millie Rose Shafer.

The family requests that memorials be made to the Oakdale Library Fund, Oakdale Missions Fund or the Heartland Care Center.
