Obituary

DOROTHY R. "DORY" GANO, 93, of Cherokee, Iowa, passed away Friday afternoon, February 5, 2016 in the Countryside Estates.

Dory was born on August 27, 1922 at Cherokee, Iowa to Charles and Myrtle (Petlon) Rhoads. She graduated from Cherokee Wilson High School in 1942. She was married to Jack H. Gano at Sioux Falls, South Dakota. She worked several jobs in Waterloo, Iowa, while her children were growing up, including; she ran a coffee house for kids as an alternative to drugs, clothes closet and food bank through her church (First Baptist Church in Waterloo); and was a volunteer probation officer for over 30 years in Waterloo.

Dory was a member of the First Baptist Church in Waterloo and Cherokee, Iowa. She was a member of Pilot Rock Chapter of the D.A.R. in Cherokee. She was also a cub scout and boy scout den leader as her boys were growing up.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband on May 28, 1984, brothers Walter "Bud" Rhoads, Stanley Rhoads, sister Margaret Rhoads.

She is survived by one daughter and two sons: Fran (Larry) Myhre of Sioux City, Iowa; Jungle Jim Gano of Cherokee, Iowa and son Alan Hayden; Stan (Ramona) Gano of Loughlin, Nevada: her extended family: Margo (Chuck) Cerny and family of Rockford, Illinois; Darcy (Jim) Widmann and family of Des Moines, Iowa; Jennifer Peck of Suisun, California.

Memorial services will be held on Sunday, August 27, 2017 at 1 p.m. at the First Baptist Church in Cherokee, Iowa. Pastor Jeff Harris will officiate. Burial will be in the Oak Hill Cemetery at Cherokee, Iowa. The family requests that there be no flowers. The Boothby Funeral Home in Cherokee is assisting the family with the arrangements.
