Obituary

DOROTHY M. HANKS, 92, of Cherokee, Iowa, and former longtime Quimby resident, passed away Saturday evening, December 31, 2016 at Cherokee Specialty Care in Cherokee.

Funeral services will be held on Friday, January 6th, at 10:30 a.m. at the Boothby Funeral Home in Cherokee. Rev. Cris Decious will officiate. Burial will be in the Quimby Cemetery at Quimby. There will be a family prayer service at 10:15 a.m. at the funeral home on Friday. Visitation will be on Thursday, January 6th from 2 p.m. until 7 p.m. with the family present from 5 p.m. until 7 p.m. at the Boothby Funeral Home in Cherokee, Iowa. Dorothy was born on December 21, 1924 at Holstein, Iowa to Budd & Ora (Joslin) Watt. She attended country school at Holstein through the 8th grade. She graduated high school in May 1943 from Cushing, IA. She attended Buena Vista College in the summer to become a country school teacher, and in later years she attended Morningside College to be able to help with preschool students.. Dorothy was united in marriage on July 9th, 1944 to Earl Hanks in Salina, Kansas. She worked as a country school teacher north of Cushing, Iowa and Ute, Iowa, Simonsen Soil Lab, preschool helper, and librarian at Quimby, Iowa. She was a member of Quimby Methodist Church. She was past president of Lyle W. Barnes Auxiliary of Quimby, Iowa where she was a lifetime member. Dorothy loved to read, listen to music, gardening and spending time with her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents Budd & Ora Watt; husband Earl in 2008; sisters Velma Murphy (Dennis), Viola Chamberlin (Jim), Delores Rudisill (Harry); brother: Orville Watt (Betty); father-in-law & mother-in-law: Monroe & Rachel Hanks; brothers-in-law & sisters-in-law James Hanks, Wayne Hanks, Louis Hanks, Walter Hanks, Gilbert Hanks, Dalsie Chasteen, Rosella Chasteen and Dale Hanks.

She is survived by her two children: Earl Eugene Hanks and his wife Margaret of Milwaukie, Oregon, Thelma Jean Hanks of Quimby, Iowa; 3 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren including: Tina Hanks of Milwaukie, Oregon, Carrie Hanks and her fiancé Tim Evanson of Bonny Lake, Washington and their children Dylon & Aspyn Evanson, Stacie Driggs and her husband David of Cherokee, Iowa and their children Allison & Zachary Driggs; a sister Lorraine Conley of Spencer, Iowa; sisters-in-law Mary Hanks of Missouri Valley, Iowa and Kathy Hanks of Onawa, Iowa; also several nieces, nephews and cousins.
