DOROTHY D. SAXEN, 87, of Sutherland, Iowa and formerly of Quimby, Iowa, passed away Sunday evening, February 9, 2014 in the Sutherland Care Center.
Funeral services will be held on Thursday, February 13th at 2 p.m. at the Pilgrim Lutheran Church in Quimby, Iowa. Pastor Don Meyer and Pastor Leroy Riemer will officiate. Burial will be in the Quimby Cemetery. Visitation will be on Wednesday from 2 p.m. until 8 p.m. at the Boothby Funeral Home in Cherokee. Dorothy was born on May 17, 1926 at Quimby, Iowa to Albert and Fern (Hollingshead) Bruning. She graduated from Quimby Consolidated High School in 1944 and was the Class Salutorian. She was married to Clarence Saxen on December 13, 1944 at Quimby, Iowa. She worked in the insurance office and the grocery store in Quimby, for Simonsen's in the Advertising Department and also in the Soil Testing Lab for several years. She was a member of the Bethel Lutheran Church in Sutherland and before that was a longtime member of the Pilgrim Lutheran Church in Quimby. Dorothy enjoyed reading, music, was a very talented trumpet player in high school and she especially loved her home and her family. She had been a resident of Sutherland since 2004 and prior to this was a longtime resident of Quimby, Iowa.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Clarence on May 1, 2001, a son James "Packy" Saxen, a brother Robert Bruning, a sister Jeri Minard and her husband John, and a brother Donald Bruning in infancy.
She is survived by two daughters: Cheryl Thomson and her husband John of Pella, Iowa; Kathy Weatherman and her husband Roger of Sutherland, Iowa; a daughter-in-law Rhonda Saxen of Cherokee, Iowa; 4 grandchildren: Stacie Thomson Norris and her husband Bob of Des Moines, Iowa; Michael Thomson of California; Jana Thomson Bloodsworth Jackson and her husband Jaison of Newton, Iowa and Jesse Weatherman of Sutherland, Iowa; 5 great grandchildren; a sister-in-law Elda Bruning of Kirkland, Illinois.
