DOUGLAS G. RUTTER, 70, of rural Marcus, Iowa, passed away peacefully Friday evening, February 3, 2017 in the Mercy Medical Center in Sioux City, Iowa with his family by his side.
Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, February 8th, at 11 a.m. at the Grace United Methodist Church in Marcus, Iowa. Pastor Ron Rice will officiate. There will be a family prayer service at 10:45 a.m.at the church on Wednesday. Visitation will be on Tuesday from 2 p.m. until 7 p.m. at the Boothby Funeral Home in Cherokee with the family present from 5 p.m. until 7 p.m. at the funeral home. Military rites will be held at the church on Wednesday by F.I. Goodburn Post #517 of the American Legion. Burial will be at a later date. Online condolences can be left at www.boothbyfuneral.com
Doug was born on October 18, 1946 to George & Mary (Woodall) Rutter. He attended Grand Meadow Schools and graduated from Marcus High School in 1964. He enlisted in the United States Air Force in the fall of 1964 and was stationed in Korea during the Vietnam War. He was married to Betty Jo Barnes on September 2, 1966 at Albaton, Iowa. Doug farmed most of his life, along with raising livestock for 40 years, specializing in breeding purebred cattle. He also owned and operated Rutter Trucking from 1988 until his retirement in 2010. He had been a longtime member, elder and trustee of the Mt. Pleasant Presbyterian Church and was currently a member of the Grace United Methodist Church in Marcus, Iowa. He was a member of the Gideon's, Cherokee County Cattleman's Association, Iowa Cattleman's Association, board member of the Maine-Anjou Association, and was a member of the Marcus Jaycees. Doug was a college sports fan, especially basketball, but he loved farming, raising cattle, and spending time with his family. He was a lifelong resident Cherokee County and resided on a farm in Tilden Township.
He was preceded in death by his parents, sister-in-law Carol Rutter and a brother-in-law Eugene Benedict.
He is survived by his wife Betty of 50 years, two sons and their families: Andrew (Laura) Rutter and their children Nicholas and Katie of Brownsburg, Indiana; Douglas Michael (Jennie) Rutter and their children Adelin, Isabella, and Livie of Farmington, Minnesota; 1 brother and 1 sister: Tom (Linda) Rutter of Cherokee, Iowa; Jean Benedict of Shelton, Washington; extended family: Bonnie Irwin of Marcus, Iowa; Nancy & Maxcell Spriggs of Kingsley, Iowa; Michael Smidt of Elk Point, South Dakota; along with many other relatives and friends.
