EDWARD A. "ED" SMITH, 78, of Cherokee, Iowa passed away unexpectedly, Friday afternoon, July 3, 2020.
Funeral services will be held on Thursday, July 9 th , at 1:30 p.m. at the Little Sioux Event Center in Cherokee, Iowa. Pastor Jonathan Riggert will officiate. Burial will be in the Afton Township Cemetery, rural Cherokee, Iowa. Visitation will be on Wednesday, July 8 th from 1 p.m. until 7 p.m. with the family present from 4 p.m. until 7 p.m.at the Boothby Funeral Home in Cherokee, Iowa. The family will meet at the funeral home on Thursday for a prayer service at 12:30 p.m. and then go in procession to the Event Center for the funeral. For the visitation and the funeral please abide by the social distancing guideline's and wear a mask if you desire. Ed was born on December 6, 1941 at Cherokee, Iowa to George and Letha (Small) Smith. He graduated from Cherokee Washington High School in 1960 and then attended Iowa State University for a short time. He farmed his whole life and had been a lifelong resident of Cherokee County. He was married to Patty Rullman Graham on March 28, 1981 at Cherokee, Iowa.
Ed enjoyed hunting, fishing in his younger years, horses, traveling, wintering in Arizona, and spending time with family which was very important to him. He was an outdoor enthusiast. He enjoyed shooting guns, especially trapshooting.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother Floyd "Swede" Smith.
He is survived by his wife of 39 years, Patty of Cherokee, Iowa; three children: LaRae (Rob) Bachman of Mallard, Iowa and their children Nichole Shomaker (fiancé Josh), Kyle Sangwin, and Tanner Bachman; Kent (Rhonda) Smith of Cherokee, Iowa and their children Kenda Smith, Jesselyn (Tony) Meyer, and John Racine; Aaron Smith of Cherokee, Iowa and his sons Derik and Tyler Smith; a step-daughter: Kimberly Durst of Spirit Lake, Iowa and her children Alesha (Jason) Worden, Shannon (Tim) Willis, and Kaylee (Nick) Schultze; 9 great grandchildren: Morgan, Macie, Kyle, Jaxon, Mason, Henry, Charlie, Joseph, and Ruby; his siblings: Bonnie (Gary) Lewis of Aurelia, Iowa; Ruby (Larry) Johnson of Cherokee, Iowa; Doris (Russell) Grashoff of Cherokee, Iowa; Roberta Radke of Alta, Iowa; John (Lynette) Smith of Cherokee, Iowa; sister-in-law: Carlen Smith of Storm Lake, Iowa; also many nieces, nephews and friends.
