In school Elaine enjoyed playing basketball and the clarinet in the school band. She graduated valedictorian from Meriden High School at the age of sixteen in 1945.

She married Donald Ladwig on September 15, 1947 and they farmed near Quimby, IA. They welcomed four children; Larry, David, Shelley, and Marlys and later moved to Cherokee.

Elaine married Duane Hollenbeck on April 2, 1977. Elaine worked at the ASCS office, REC and Wilson Foods. Upon retirement, she loved being the greeter at the Boothby Funeral Home. She sang in the choir, served as a children's Sunday school teacher, a deaconess, and faithfully attended White Cross where she enjoyed making quilts for the homeless.

Many will remember Elaine for her cooking. Everyone loved her Danish pastry, cream filled cupcakes, and the Oyster Stew she made for the MEFC annual Harvest Festival. She loved all kinds of sporting events of which her favorite were the Cyclones. In her spare time she loved visiting with people, knitting afghans and was part of ladies weekly Bible study.
