ERMA M. VOLKERT, 84, of Quimby, Iowa, passed away Wednesday afternoon May 29, 2013 at the Cherokee Regional Medical Center.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, June 1st, at 10:30 a.m. at the Pilgrim Lutheran Church in Quimby, Iowa. Pastor Don Meyer will officiate, with Vicar Philip Beyersdorf assisting. Burial will be in the Quimby Cemetery. There will be a family prayer service at 10:15 a.m. at the church on Saturday. Visitation will be on Friday from 1 p.m. until 8 p.m. with the family present from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. at the Boothby Funeral Home in Cherokee. Erma was born on December 9, 1928 at Correctionville, Iowa to Adolf & Clara (Petersen) Tamm. She attended country school near Holstein and attended Quimby Community Schools. She lived in Correctionville until 1934, in Holstein for 10 years; moving to a farm near Quimby in 1943. She was married to Alvin A. Volkert on January 8, 1954 at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Cherokee. The coupled farmed until 1996 when they retired and moved to Quimby.Iowa. She was a homemaker, but like most farm wife's, she was a cook, a housekeeper, a nurse, helping with livestock, walking beans, taking care of chickens, tending to the garden and then canning at the end of the summer. She and Alvin were a great team. She and Alvin were also involved in mowing several cemeteries in the county. She was a member of the Pilgrim Lutheran Church. She enjoyed taking care of her flowers, gardening, sewing, riding horses when she was younger, fishing and time spent with her family. She was loved by all, and will be truly missed.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband January 26, 2012. daughter-in-law Theresa Volkert, a sister Louise Peekschneider, several brothers-in-law, aunts, uncles, and nephews.
Erma is survived by two sons: Ardell Volkert of Cherokee, Iowa; Larry Volkert of Cherokee, Iowa; 8 grandchildren: Steven (Emily) Volkert of Blair, Nebraska; Rebecca Carey and special friend Eric of Blair, Nebraska; Danny Volkert and fiance Christa of St. Roberts, Missouri; Travis (Natalia) Sipes of Waterloo, Iowa; Chad (Kendra) Mitchell of Cherokee, Iowa; Cory Volkert of Cherokee, Iowa; Nicholas Volkert of Cherokee, Iowa; Alexander Volkert of Cherokee, Iowa; 12 great grandchildren; 5 sisters-in-law Wanda (Paul) Samuelson of Aurelia, Iowa; Freida Vohs of Holstein, Iowa; Carolyn (Jim) Young of Galva, Iowa; Janet Hahn of Aurelia, Iowa; Barbara Volkert and her special friend Robert Compton of Cherokee, Iowa; also several nieces and nephews and many friends.
