Obituary

ETTA  IRENE  CALDWELL, 96 , of Mapleton, Minnesota, formerly of Cherokee, Iowa, died and went to be with her husband on March 21, 2019, their 75 th wedding anniversary.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, March 30 th , at 10:30 a.m. at the Memorial Presbyterian Church in Cherokee, Iowa. Pastor Eric Wright will officiate. Burial will be before the service on Saturday in the Oak Hill Cemetery at Cherokee, Iowa. Visitation will be on Friday from 2 p.m. until 7 p.m. with the family present from 5 p.m. until 7 p.m. at the Boothby Funeral Home in Cherokee, Iowa. Etta was born on December 16, 1922 to Evert and Wilhelmina (Akkerman) Sleeper in George, Iowa.  Etta graduated from Cherokee Public Schools in 1940. She worked in Omaha, NE and Renton, WA during World War II before returning to Cherokee.

She was married to William Caldwell on March 21, 1944 in Cherokee, Iowa.  Etta was a homemaker and mother of four children.  She was a member of the Memorial Presbyterian Church in Cherokee, Iowa, where she was a deacon and served in many volunteer positions.

Etta and Bill farmed south of Sutherland and west of Cherokee. Etta was active in the Know Your Neighbor (KYN) club near Sutherland for more than 65 years. She and Bill enjoyed playing cards, dancing, bowling, and motorcycling. She was known as a good friend to many and a beloved mother and grandmother.

Etta was preceded in death by her parents, husband William Caldwell, infant daughter Karen, sister Fannie Hatterman, and brother Henry "Hank" Sleeper.

She is survived by her three children: Shirley (Dan) Dunlap of Waterloo, Iowa; Larry (Carolyn) Caldwell of Stillwater, Oklahoma; Brian Caldwell (Lisa) of Mapleton, Minnesota; a sister, Viola Wisniewski of Pardeeville, Wisconsin; seven grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests any memorials be made to the Memorial Presbyterian Church, 127 East Willow Street, P.O. Box 825, Cherokee, IA 51012.
