H. EVELYN HELKENN, 99, of Cherokee, Iowa, formerly of Storm Lake, passed away Wednesday evening, September 10, 2014 at Cherokee Villa Nursing & Rehab Center.
A time of visitation will be held on Monday, September 15th from 2 p.m. until 7:30 p.m. with the family present from 6 p.m. until 7:30 p.m. at the Boothby Funeral Home in Cherokee. Harriet Evelyn Thompson was born February 10, 1915 rural Quimby, Iowa to Joesph H. & Minnie (Gebers) Thompson. She graduated from Quimby High School. She was married to Marvin Hans Helkenn on June 10, 1944 at Storm Lake. She received her B.A. Degree from Buena Vista College. She taught school in Nemaha, Truesdale, Newell and Storm Lake (North Elementary), retiring on May 20, 1981. She had lived in Cherokee since 1988, prior to this on an acreage near Storm Lake, Iowa. She was a member of the First Church of Christ in Cherokee. She enjoyed quilting, reading and gardening.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Marvin on January 19, 1988, a son-in-law Gary Dobson 28, 2003; and two sisters Beatrice Specht on July 20, 1987 and Ruby Courtright on October 29, 1994.
She is survived by one son, Daniel Helkenn and his wife Julia of Eden Prairie, Minnesota; one daughter Sally Dobson of rural Cherokee, Iowa 5 grandchildren; Leigh Peterson, Aaron (Jeri) Dobson, Luke (Christina) Dobson, Shonna (Mike) Myers, and Melissa (Nate) Iverson;
10 great grandchildren; Anya Myers, Lillian, Kierstan and Jocelyn Iverson; Lane and Josie Peterson, Zoe, Diesel and Kannon Dobson. Tyler Dobson.
