Evelyn (Evie) Jean Berglund , 98, of Cherokee, Iowa and formerly of rural Marcus, Iowa, passed away on Wednesday, March 17, 2021 at Cherokee Specialty Care in Cherokee, Iowa.
Private family funeral services will be held on Saturday, March 20, 2021 at 10:30 a.m. at the Boothby Funeral Home in Cherokee, Iowa. Rev. Duane Queen will officiate. Burial will be in the Oak Hill Cemetery at Cherokee, Iowa. Public visitation will be held on Friday, March 19, 2021 from 2 p.m. to 7 p.m. with the family present from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the Boothby Funeral Home in Cherokee, Iowa. Services will be livestreamed on the Boothby Funeral Home website through the assistance of Fuller Digital Solutions. Please practice social distancing and masks will be required. Online condolences may be left at www.boothbyfuneral.com . In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made to Cherokee County 4-H in memory of Evie.
Evie was born on January 7, 1923 to Clarence and Florence (Manker) Weinreich in rural Kingsley, Iowa. She attended rural school graduating from Pierson High School in 1940. She attended Western Union College in LeMars, (Westmar College) receiving her teaching certificate.
She was married to Carl Arnold Berglund on May 21, 1943 in Plymouth County, Iowa. She taught rural school for four years and was later a substitute teacher and secretary. She loved being a teacher, wife, mother, and grandmother as well as Sunday School, Bible School teacher, and 4-H leader for many years.
Evie enjoyed planning the Marcus Fair Church Service and working in the canning department for many years. She received the Marcus Fair Board Award, was inducted into the Cherokee County Hall of Fame in 2002 and received the Iowa State Fair Hall of Fame Award for Volunteer Service and Leadership in 2004.
She enjoyed being a farmer's wife and "stay at home" mom for their five children, Jane, Tom, Bob, Jill and Dan. She loved them and the 9 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren. They loved her cinnamon rolls and her quilts. Arnie and Evie enjoyed many trips together and also several with family members. She had thousands of slide pictures of favorite locations like Glacier National Park and Cypress Gardens. Evie also loved the clouds and the sunsets.
Evie was preceded in death by her husband Arnie, son Robert, and a grandson Brian Whyte, her parents, brothers Rex, Dean, and Wayne Weinreich.
Evie is survived by her five children, Jane (Scott) Whyte of Goldfield, Iowa, Tom Berglund of Daytona Beach, Florida, Jill (Lance) Freed of West Okoboji, Iowa, and Dan (Lori) Berglund of Storm Lake, Iowa, 8 grandchildren, Heather (Kurt) Johnson of Des Moines, Iowa, Heidi (Cameron) Gregg of Elkhorn, Nebraska, Preston (Jillian) Freed of Yardley, Pennsylvania, Natalie (Carl) Anderson of Coralville, Iowa, Christopher Freed of Paullina, Iowa, Lauren Berglund of St. James, New York, Seth Berglund of Storm Lake, Iowa, and Cobe Berglund of Storm Lake, Iowa and 7 great-grandchildren Calvin, Chloe, Charlotte, Lainey, Halle, C.J., and Ainsley, brother Don Weinreich of Centennial, Colorado, brother-in-law Wally Miller Sr., of Cherokee, Iowa, and sister-in-law Dale Weinreich of Buena Park, California.
