Obituary

GALE S. EVANS, 92, of Cherokee, Iowa passed away Thursday, March 21, 2013 at Countryside Estates in Cherokee.

Graveside Memorial services will be held on Saturday, March 30th, at 10 a.m. at the Cedar Cemetery, rural Larrabee, Iowa. Rev. Ethan Sayler will officiate. There will be military rites by L.A. Wescott Post #2253 of the V.F.W. It was Gale's wishes to be cremated and there will be no visitation. The Boothby Funeral Home in Cherokee is assisting the family with the arrangements. Gale was born March 3, 1921 at rural Leon, Iowa to Walter and Winnie (Shira) Evans
He attended country school and graduated from Leon High School in 1938. He came to Cherokee in 1938 and worked at Cherokee Mental Health Institute where his father was the Farm Superintendent. He was married to May (Jeri) Wilkie on September 8, 1941 in San Diego, California. They both worked at Consolidated Aircraft Factory until the bombing at Pearl Harbor. Gale enlisted in the U. S. Navy and served aboard the Aircraft carrier Cape Esperance, as a mechanic on the catapult crew until the end of the war.

In 1946, he returned to Cherokee and went into partnership with Ed Willbrandt, building a series of new homes. For 25 years he worked for Lundell Manufacturing as a machinery salesman selling farm equipment. Gale was one of the highest paid salesman for Lundell Manufacturing. He retired, but then went to work for Wetherell Manufacturing in Cleghorn. He had a winning personality and a collection of humorous jokes for his customers. He owned two antique cars; a 1914 Ford Brass Age Model T and a 1910 Buick. He collected over 30 antique cars for the Horn Brothers that now can be viewed in the Horn Brothers Museum in Florida. He knew the models of every car and enjoyed reading antique car magazines. He was a member of the Cherokee Country Club and enjoyed bowling, golfing, gardening and raising roses. He can best be remembered by his winning smile, and driving a washed and polished car.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister-in-law Margaret Evans.

He is survived by his wife, Jeri, one daughter and two sons: Donna (Doug) Staver of Platteville, CO; David Evans of Concord, CA; Paul (Jan) Evans of Mead, CO; 7 Grandchildren: Jason Staver of Mead, CO; Ryan Staver of Platteville, CO; Amy (Pete) Reichel of Henderson, CO; Neil Kalenski of Boulder, CO; Jay (Michelle) Kalenski of Boulder, CO; Colton and Kelsie Evans of Shingle Springs, CA; 5 great grandchildren: Jack and Charle Staver of Mead, CO, Wyatt and Emma Staver of Platteville, CO, Hunter Kalinski of Boulder, CO; a sister Bonnie (Wayne) Bucy of Bonita Springs, FL; brother Doyle Evans of Omaha, NE; nephews and nieces: Carolle (Rob) Kinney of Bonita Springs, FL; Jeff (Dena) Bucy of Loveland, CO; Doug (Julie) Evans and their sons Austin and Michael of Omaha, NE; Jennifer (Charlie) Finazo and their children Chandler, Jackson and Rocco of Bonita Springs, FL.
