Obituary
GARY B. DOHERTY, 71, of Cherokee, Iowa passed away Friday, July 26, 2013 while on a fishing trip in Canada.
Funeral services will be held on Thursday, August 1st, at 10:30 a.m. at the Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Cherokee. Pastor Kathy Wicks will officiate. Burial will be in the Oak Hill Cemetery at Cherokee. There will be military rites at the graveside by L.A. Wescott Post #2253 of the V.F.W. There will be a family prayer service at 10:15 a.m. at the church on Thursday. Visitation will be on Wednesday from 10 a.m. until 8 p.m. with the family present from 6:30 p.m. until

Gary was born November 29, 1941 at Des Moines, Iowa to John B. and Esther (Raveling) Doherty. He graduated from Hartley High School in 1959. He served in the U. S. Navy from 1959 until 1963 during the Cuban Missle Crisis; serving on ships USS Coral Sea, Uvalde AKA 88 and the USS Ticonderoga He was married to Carla Jean Ebel on June 28, 1961 at Hartley, Iowa. Gary farmed for 34 years in Cherokee County retiring in 2003 and then drove cars and trucks for Holzhauer Motors for several years. He also developed the Doherty Housing Addition and enjoyed watching it develop. His passion was fishing and ironically that is what he was doing when he passed away on Friday in Ontario, Canada. He also enjoyed spending time with his wife, his kids and grandkids; he liked hunting, gardening, having coffee with the guys and loved to visit. He was a member of the Bethlehem Lutheran Church and an active member of L. A. Wescott Post #2253 of the V.F.W.
He was preceded in death by his father John Doherty, his mother Esther Doherty Bennett and step-father Orlan Bennett.
He is survived by his wife Jean, one son and one daughter; Brian Doherty of Cherokee, Iowa; Lisa Lundquist and her husband Jeff of Meriden, Iowa; 2 grandchildren: Amber and Brady Lundquist; two sisters; Janice Korleski and her husband Jerry of Cherokee, Iowa; Geraldine Tibbetts and her husband Gary of Spirit Lake, Iowa; several nieces and nephews.
