Jerry was born on September 7, 1935 at LeMars, Iowa to George & Lillian Margaret (Neir) Scott. He was raised on a farm two miles northwest of Marcus. He attended Marcus Public Schools and graduated in 1953. He was married to Shirley French in 1958 and they welcomed a son Thomas. He farmed for several years. He was later married to Ervina Saner on August 31, 1968 at Cherokee, Iowa. To this union two daughters were born Vicki and Cara. Jerry owned and operated a Co-op Tank Wagon Service from 1969 until 1980 and then for the First Co-op in Cleghorn from 1980 until his retirement in 2001 due to health reasons. While working for the elevator he performed custom application of chemicals and spent many hours behind the wheel of a truck. In the early 1970's he began serving on the Cleghorn City Council and was a Lion's Club member. Jerry was very proud of his 40 years of service to the Cleghorn Fire Department, having served from 1967 – 2007. He put together trucks (i.e. water trucks), answered calls and made sure all the vehicles were in working order. He served as a First Responder and always said that his group was a very tight unit. Jerry enjoyed woodworking, fishing, updating their home, and following their children's many sports functions. He was a member of the St. Paul's United Methodist Church in Cherokee.

He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother and his wife Charles (Joan) Scott, and a brother-in-law Clifford Carlson.

He is survived by his wife Ervina of Cleghorn, Iowa; three children and six grandchildren: Thomas (Karen) Scott of Lindstrom, Minnesota; Vicki Scott of Des Moines, Iowa and her sons Thor and Dane Hoogeveen; Cara (Michael) Lubeck of Cherokee, Iowa and their children Maggie (Nate) Cockburn, Abby Lubeck, Riley and Carli Lubeck; one sister Carol Carlson of Arizona; brother-in-law Eugene (Mary) Saner of Viroqua, Wisconsin; also several nieces and nephews.
