Obituary

GORDON  D.  HAMMOND , 82, of Cherokee, Iowa, passed away Thursday morning, July 20, 2023 at Accura Healthcare of Cherokee.

A come and go time of sharing memories and fellowship with the family will be held on Monday, July 24th, from 4 p.m. until 6 p.m. at Kee Stir's V.F.W. in Cherokee, Iowa. Gordon was born on June 24, 1941 in Washta, Iowa to Cecil and Veris (Fogleman) Hammond.  He enlisted in the Army in 1959 and was honorably discharged in 1964. During his enlistment, Gordon served one year in Korea.

In 1961, Gordon married Dixie Cantrell in Paso Robles, California and together they had three children.

Gordon spent decades in the automotive industry, managing and owning auto body shops. Gordon developed a passion for flying planes and earned his pilot's license. He moved to Tulsa, Oklahoma to attend the Spartan School of Aeronautics, graduating in 1981.

After moving back to the Cherokee area, Gordon managed an auto body shop, sold insurance and real estate, and worked at an auto salvage yard until his retirement.

In 1999, Gordon married Donna Wilken in Cherokee, Iowa. He spent many of his retirement years with Donna, playing cards, visiting with friends and family, and spending time with their dog Arizona.

He is survived by his three children: Beckie Hammond of Onalaska, Wisconsin; Cynde (Larry) Stone of Fredericksburg, Virginia; Brady (Michelle) Hammond of Bettendorf, Iowa; four grandchildren: Ethan (Bethany) Bown, Austin Bown, Bryn DeVries, and Serena (Shane) Herkert; his siblings: Koreen (Bud) Tharp of Cherokee, Iowa; John (Dorie) Hammond of Ellsworth, Kansas; Patricia Brown of Overton, Nevada; Peggy Nagel of Spirit Lake, Iowa; Steve (Margaret) Hammond of Simi Valley, California; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law: Dennis Altman of New Lebanon, Ohio; Karen (Bill) Burkhardt of Cherokee, Iowa; Larry Harms of Gillette Grove, Iowa; Sandra Harms of Greensboro, North Carolina.

He was preceded in death by his wife Donna on July 20, 2018, his parents, brothers George and Richard Hammond, sisters Kim Powers and Carol Beck, an infant brother Cecil Hammond Jr. and an infant sister Deanna Faye Hammond; brothers-in-law Bob Brown, Bob Beck, Ed Harms, Roger Harms, sister-in-law Mary Ellen Snyder.
