HARLAND L. BROWNMILLER, 92, of Spencer, Iowa, passed away Friday morning, January 1, 2016 in the Community Memorial Health Center in Hartley, Iowa.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, January 9th, at 10:30 a.m. at the First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) in Spencer, Iowa. Pastor Sara Galindo will officiate. Burial will be in the Oak Hill Cemetery at Cherokee, Iowa. There will be a family prayer service at 10:15 a.m. at the church on Saturday. Visitation will be on Friday, January 8th from 4 p.m. until 7 p.m. at the First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) in Spencer with the family present 5 p.m. until 7 p.m. The Boothby Funeral Home in Cherokee, Iowa is in charge of the arrangements. Harland LeRoy Brownmiller, the son of Ray Edward and Clara (Williams) Brownmiller was born on April 15, 1923 in Pilot Township, Cherokee County, Iowa. He received his early education in the rural schools.
Harland met the love of his life, Barbara Jones in her Dad's "hay field". Harland came to bale hay, then came calling soon after. They were married on November 22, 1947 in the Church of Christ in Cherokee, Iowa. Their faith and family were the most important thing to them.
Harland was a farmer and a mechanic. Harland and Barbara farmed in Cherokee until 1959, then moved to Rossie area until 1968, when they moved to Spencer, Iowa. Harland then worked for Case Power & Equipment and retired from Eaton's.
Throughout the years Harland and Barbara had many blessings. Their faith in the Lord has always been very strong and a huge factor in all they did. He was very active in the First Christian Church in Spencer. He was a Deacon, belonged to the Disciples Men's Group, Homebuilders class and served on many committees.
He belonged to Graham International Auto Club, Iowa Great Lakes Antique Car Club and Leisure Living Camping Group.
During his retirement he rebuilt a 1930 Graham car. He enjoyed going to car shows with the Graham. Harland also spent time building bird houses and other wood carvings. They spent much time camping and traveling.
He fell in December of 2014, requiring him to become a resident of Community Memorial Health Center in Hartley, Iowa in January, 2015.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Barbara on October 21, 2015 brothers: Elmo and his wife Lena, Vernon and his wife Lillian (Lon), Rosco, Orval and his wife Violet and Ralph and his wives Luella (deceased 1954) and Bea; sisters: Pearl and her husband Carl Peterson, Lila Maranell and Vanona and her husbands, Ted Chinn (deceased 1966) and Clifford Conry (deceased 1977), grandson; C. Michael Brownmiller and special friends Adrain and Amanda Blok.
Left to cherish his memory are two sons: Curtis Brownmiller and his wife Pat of Richardson, Texas; Jeffery Brownmiller and his wife Myriam of Kingman, Arizona; two daughters: Connie and her husband Daniel Hollander of Spencer, Iowa; Julie and her husband Edward Kinsley of Spencer, Iowa; 10 grandchildren, 19 great grandchildren, several special step-grandchildren, many nieces and nephews, and other relatives and friends.
