Obituary

HAROLD "HARRY" McMANUS, 90, of Cherokee, Iowa passed away Sunday, September 12, 2010 at Countryside Estates in Cherokee, Iowa.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, September 16th, at 10:30 a.m. at the Boothby Funeral Home in Cherokee, Iowa. Rev. Magrey deVega will officiate. Burial will be in the Oak Hill Cemetery in Cherokee. Visitation will be from 11 a.m. until 8 p.m. on Wednesday with the family present from 6:30 p.m. until 8 p.m. On line condolences may be left at www.boothbyfuneral.com

Harry was born February 28, 1920 in Lame Deer, Montana to Walter & Alice (Raney).
He graduated from Cherokee Wilson High School in 1939. He was the high school wrestling champ in 1939. He was a veteran of World War II and the Korean War in the U. S. Navy. He was a Master Chief Aviation Machinist Mate, a rank appointed by Congress. Harry was a survivor of the sinking of the USS Houston CV30 and spent close to 4 years in a Japanese Prison Camp. Harold was one of three sailors imprisoned with the "Lost Battalion." While in the Japanese Prison Camp, on his birthday, the Japanese lit his birthday cake for him; referring to the bombing of the USS Houston.

He was married to Betty Shoemaker on September 21, 1963 in Cherokee, Iowa. She passed away on April 20, 1997. Harry had worked for Perrin's Mink Ranch for one year, Lundell Manufacturing for a short time, for Rubles Standard for a number of years and also for the Pastime Bar.

He was a member of L. A. Wescott Post #2253 of the V.F.W. and the American Legion. He enjoyed eating, being a pallbearer for many veterans and also presented the U.S. Flag to many veterans families at the cemetery; was a good practical joker and enjoyed telling jokes. He was a caller for the Cherokee V.F.W. Bingo; enjoyed playing the game but was asked not to come back to Remsen because he yelled too loud and scared the old ladies.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, sisters Gladys Witte, Ethel Morris, Gertrude Howard, Dora Dean Kahl; brothers Roy McManus and O.C. McManus who was also a P.O.W. with Harold during World War II.

He is survived by one son Walter McManus and his wife Mary of DeRidder, Louisiana;
2 granddaughters; 5 great grandchildren; one sister Hazel Boulay of Harbor City, California; several nieces and nephews.

Harry always liked Cherokee and would not move anywhere else and always said "Cherokee always took good care of me."
