HAROLD  D.  ZARR  SR. 93, of Sioux City, Iowa and formerly of Cherokee, Iowa, passed away Sunday morning, November 1, 2020 at his residence in Sioux City.

Memorial services for Harold and his wife Marjorie will be held on Saturday, November 7, 2020 at 2 p.m. at the St. James United Methodist Church in Sioux City, Iowa. Pastor Merlyne Smith of Sioux City, Iowa will officiate. Burial of the cremains will be on Saturday, November 7 ^th at 10:30 a.m. at the Oak Hill Cemetery in Cherokee, Iowa with military rites by L.A. Wescott Post #2253 of the V.F.W. and the Cherokee American Legion. There will be no visitation. Please practice social distancing and masks are required at the memorial service. Harold was born on October 6, 1927 at Le Mars, Iowa to Jared W. & Hazel (Kissinger) Zarr. He graduated from Cherokee High School in 1945. Harold served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean Conflict from 1950-1954 being honorably discharged as a Petty Officer First Class. He was married to Marjorie Taylor on May 18, 1952 at Cherokee, Iowa.

He worked as an assessor for 30 years; serving Cherokee County for 12 years, the city of Ames for 2 years, and Woodbury County for 16 years, before retiring on April 1, 1995. Harold served on the Cherokee County Farm Bureau Board holding various roles such as Township Leader, County Vice President, County President, and County Voting Delegate. He had served on the board of the Iowa State Association of Assessors where he held the positions of President and Vice President and contributed to many committee assignments. He served on the Taxation and Finance Committee of National Association of Counties and for many years on the board of the Sioux City Municipal Credit Union. He had also served many years on the IPERS Board of Directors.

He was a member of the St. James United Methodist Church in Sioux City, Iowa. In his spare time, he enjoyed gardening and spending time with family. Harold had been a resident of Sioux City, since 1979, prior to this in Ames for 2 years, and prior to that in Cherokee for 43 years.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a son Jeff Zarr, his wife Marjorie on April 3, 2020, a brother Jared "Bud" Zarr, three sisters Ruth Walter, Fern Zarr, and Mae Nelson.

He is survived by three children: Harold (Sue) Zarr Jr. of Ankeny, Iowa; Greg (Anita) Zarr of Aurelia, Iowa; Melissa (Jeff) Dawdy of Sioux City, Iowa; 11 grandchildren: Jennifer Zarr of Clarksville, TN; Ashley Zarr of Phoenix, AZ; Steven (Stephanie) Zarr of Cherokee, IA; Andrew Zarr of Ankeny, IA; Hilary (Taylor) Witzel of Ankeny, IA; Allyson Zarr of Bondurant, IA; Kristin (Trevor) Hodge of Sioux City, IA; Meggan (Dustin) Hohbach of Marcus, IA; Adam (Katelyn) Groves of Sioux City, IA; Shawn (Kelsey) Pranschke of Omaha, NE; Natasha Regenitter of Holstein, IA; 7 great grandchildren: Riley Groves, Brayden Paskert, Cohen Hohbach, Jackson & Maverick Zarr, Cameron & Parker Groves; two brothers-in-law: Keith (Normalene) Taylor of Calimesa, California; Roger (Junie) Taylor of Florence, South Carolina.
