HELEN M. DAVIS, 98, of Cherokee, Iowa, passed away Friday morning, December 16, 2016 in the Cherokee Regional Medical Center.
Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, December 20th, at 10:30 a.m. at the First Church of Christ in Cherokee, Iowa. Pastor Tom Lewis will officiate. Burial will be in the Cherokee Memory Gardens Cemetery. There will be a family prayer service at 10:15 a.m. at the church on Tuesday. Visitation will be on Monday from 2 p.m. until 7 p.m. with the family present from 5 p.m. until 7 p.m. at the Boothby Funeral Home in Cherokee, Iowa. Helen Marie (Hurd) Davis was born December 17, 1917, in Meriden, Ia. to Frank and Beatrice (Walker) Hurd.
She grew up on a farm north of Meriden with her parents and 3 sisters. Helen graduated from Meriden School.
She married Glenn F. Davis on Oct. 19, 1946 in Dakota City, NE. and honeymooned in Lincoln NE. They raised their five children on an acreage north of Cherokee in the house she and Glenn built with their own hands; the beautiful Mill Creek valley right outside their back door.
Helen and Glenn dedicated their lives to Christ in 1953, and too the family that is The First Church of Christ of Cherokee. They served the congregation in leadership roles until Glenn's passing in Oct of 1990, and until Helen could no longer drive.
Helen is a recipient of numerous awards as a volunteer, even being recognized several times by the State of Iowa with the honored Governors Award. Helen volunteered at The Cherokee Villa nursing home for close to 50 years, playing the piano and leading sing-a-longs, giving manicures, or simply visiting with the residents. She was at her best when she was able to lend a hand or offer comfort and counsel, a hug, or just a smile.
Helen also enjoyed gardening, being outdoors, and games of solitaire while watching TV. She loved to play hymns on the old upright piano, and she loved picnics and camping.
She is preceded in death by her parents; husband Glenn on October 12, 1990, and his parents; sisters, Vera Prunty and Frances Ducommun; 4 brother-in-laws and 3 nephews.
She will be missed by her 5 children, Sharen & John Spencer of Upton, WY, Douglas & Lynn Davis of Spirit Lake, IA., Gene & Mary Davis of Prescott Valley, AZ., Jimmy Davis & Jomi Anderson, and Randall & Laure Davis, of Cherokee, IA; 8 grandchildren: Shelly Beaty of Pine Haven, WY, Curtis Spencer of Sioux Falls S.D., Melissa Swallow of Piedmont, S.D., Levi Davis of Phoenix, AZ., Thomas Davis of Northfield,MN, Justin Davis, Jason Davis, and Jennifer Davis all of Cherokee. She has 3 great grandchildren and 2 great great grandchildren. She is also survived by her twin sister, Helene Prunty of Cherokee, 4 nephews, 4 nieces, and many great and great great nieces and nephews.
