Obituary

HELEN L. DITTMER, 83, of Cherokee, Iowa and formerly of Cushing, Iowa, passed away Saturday morning, January 24, 2015 in the Cherokee Villa Nursing & Rehab Center.

Funeral services will be held on Thursday, January 29th, at 10:30 a.m. at the First Church of Christ in Cherokee. Pastor Tom Lewis will officiate. Burial will be in the Cherokee Memory Gardens. Visitation will be on Wednesday from 2 p.m. until 8 p.m. with the family present from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. with a prayer service at 7:30 p.m. at the Boothby Funeral Home in Cherokee. Helen was born on August 10, 1931 in Cherokee, Iowa to Reginald & Ellar (Drake) Martin. She graduated from Cherokee Wilson High School in 1950. Just out of high school she went to work for the Cherokee Clinic. She was married to Harold R. Dittmer on May 22, 1955 at the Central Church of Christ in Cherokee. She farmed with her husband for several years and had also worked for Vine's Café in Cushing, Eastwood Schools in the Kitchen, retiring after 22 years of service. She had been a resident of Cherokee the past 10 years and prior to this in Cushing from 1963 until 2004 and before that on a farm in rural Holstein for 8 years. While in Cushing she was a member of the St. John Lutheran Church and then after moving to Cherokee moved her membership to the First Church of Christ. Helen belonged to the Bible Buddies at the First Church of Christ. She enjoyed cooking, reading, crossword puzzles, jigsaw puzzles, taking long walks with her friend and neighbor Mavis Smith, and was a gifted cake maker.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Harold in February of 2003, two brothers Harold "Sonny" and Jim Martin.

She is survived by her four children: Dixie Meyer of Denton, Texas; Donald Dittmer of Omaha, Nebraska; Bruce (Sandy) Dittmer of Nevada, Iowa; Barry (Brenda) Dittmer of Hinton, Iowa; 11 grandchildren; 8 great grandchildren; 1 step great grandchild; her sister Betty Martin of Cherokee, Iowa; 3 sisters-in-law: Phyllis Martin of Cherokee, Iowa, Gerry Martin of Windsor, Virginia, and Carol Wolf of Waynesboro, Virginia; brother-in-law and his wife: Loren & Audrey Dittmer of Holstein, Iowa; also several nieces and nephews; her beloved dog Casper was a great companion to her the last few years.
