Obituary

HELEN MATHIS, 91, of Aurelia, Iowa passed away Thursday, March 18, 2010 at Cherokee Villa Nursing & Rehab Center.

Memorial services will be held on Saturday, March 20th, at 1:30 p.m. at the Boothby Funeral Home in Cherokee. Pastor Bruce Rapp will officiate. Burial will be in the Cedar Cemetery at a later date. There will be no visitation. Online condolences can be left at www.boothbyfuneral.com

Helen was born March 28, 1918 in Silver Township, Cherokee Co., Iowa to Rudolph & May (Munz) Bergert. She attended school in Quimby and Cherokee graduating in 1936 from Wilson High School. She was married to Paul Mathis on September 16, 1937 at Spencer, Iowa. The couple farmed in Pilot Township for many years. She was a volunteer at the Cherokee Villa. Helen had lived in Aurelia since 1966. She enjoyed spending time with her family and gambling at the boat.

She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband Paul Mathis on October 18, 1999, a son and daughter-in-law Doug and Bobbi Mathis, a sister Hilda Walden and brothers William, John and Harry Bergert.

She is survived by one son: Roger Mathis and his wife Joan of Loveland, Colorado; 13 grandchildren: Debbie McGuire of South Carolina; Sheri Hudson of Coco Beach, Florida; Mike Mathis of Wisconsin; Beth Bresson of Independence, Iowa; Teresa Norland of Cherokee, Iowa; Jonathan Mathis of Lawton, Iowa; Jason Mathis of Cherokee, Iowa; Kareena (Michael) Tomky of Mead, Colorado; Kasonda (Mitchell) Drefke of Cherokee, Iowa; Justin Mathis of Longmont, Colorado; Kristeena Mathis of Las Vegas, Nevada; Jodi Mathis of Loveland, Colorado; Andrew Mathis of Loveland, Colorado; 18 great grandchildren: Kasondra, Kyle & Emily Norland; Justine Mathis & Andrea Rhea; Josh Mathis & Amanda Green; Mariah, Mikaela, Blake & Thadeus Booth; Tyler & Ashley Mathis; Jacob & Shelby Mathis; Sylvianne & Jasmine Rivera; Kathrine Bresson; one great great granddaughter Emma Green.
