HERBERT D. YORK , 83, of Cherokee, Iowa, formerly of Bloomfield, Iowa passed away on Friday, September 24, 2021 at Careage Hills nursing home in Cherokee.
Graveside funeral services with military rites will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, October 1, 2021 at the Bloomfield I.O.O.F. Cemetery in Bloomfield, Iowa. Rev. Donna Olinger will officiate. Military rites will be conducted by the Reed-Whisler American Legion Post #78, Bloomfield, Iowa. Visitation with the family present will be on Wednesday, September 29th from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the Boothby Funeral Home in Cherokee, Iowa. There will be a prayer service at 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday evening following the visitation for all family and friends to attend with Pastor Mark Leeds officiating. The family requests friends to bring memories of Herbert to share. In lieu of flowers, memorials given to the family will go to a charity to be decided on at a later date. Herb was born on November 19, 1937 to Herman Bruce and Belva Fern (Irvin) York at Bloomfield, Iowa. He attended Bloomfield Schools. He enlisted in the United States Army serving active duty from January 1961 to January 1963 and then in Reserve duty until his honorable discharge in 1967. He obtained his G.E.D. while in the service. He attended Body and Fender School in Sioux City, Iowa.
He worked at the Davis County Hospital in Bloomfield, Iowa, the Cherokee Mental Health Institute for a few years, the Union Pacific Railroad in Bloomington, Illinois, he owned and operated his own body and fender repair shop in Bloomfield, Iowa, until his retirement. He had been a resident of Cherokee, Iowa since January of 2018.
Herb was affiliated with the Christian Church in Bloomfield, Iowa.
He loved restoring old cars, visiting family and friends, trains, and attending car shows. He was a member of the Studebaker Car Club.
Herb was preceded in death by his parents, brothers Bill and Benjamin York, sister Erma Lee Friend, brothers-in-law Royal Ritz and Raymond Friend.
Herb is survived by his sister: Emma Ritz of Aurelia, Iowa; brother: Larry (Joyce) York of Cherokee, Iowa; sister-in-law Carolyn York of State Center, Iowa and several nieces and nephews.
