Obituary

HOSEA J. CARNES JR., 83, of rural Cherokee, Iowa passed away Tuesday, February 7, 2012 at Munroe Regional Medical Center in Ocala, Florida.

Funeral services will be held on Monday, February 13, 2012 at 10:30 a.m. at Pilgrim Lutheran Church in Quimby, Iowa. Pastor Don Meyer & Vicar Scot Kerns will officiate. There will be a family prayer service at 10:15 a.m. Monday morning at the church. Burial will be in Pilot Township Cemetery at rural Cherokee, Iowa. There will be military rites at the graveside by the Quimby American Legion and L.A. Wescott Post #2253 of the V.F.W. Visitation will be held on Sunday, February 12th from 11 a.m. until 8 p.m. with the family present from 5-7 p.m. at the Boothby Funeral Home in Cherokee. Hosea was born on February 23, 1928 to Hosea & Jeanette (Matson) Carnes Sr. at Hartington, Nebraska. He graduated from Castana High School in 1945. He joined the United States Air Force in 1950 and was honorably discharged in 1953. He was united in marriage to Georgine Greene on March 22, 1951 in Biloxi, Mississippi, where Hosea was stationed. After his service in the Air Force was completed, they moved back to Iowa and farmed in the areas of Moville and Holstein. In 1968, Hosea and Georgine bought a farm four miles northeast of Quimby in Pilot Township. He was a past Chairman and Elder of the Pilgrim Lutheran Church in Quimby. He was a 50 year member of the Quimby American Legion, Pilot Township Trustee and Quimby Golf Course. He enjoyed playing cards, golfing, traveling, spending winters in Florida and time spent with his family.

He was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters Marie Carnes, Marvel Clover and her husband Thomas, a brother Frank Carnes and a sister in law Patricia Bowen.

Hosea is survived by his loving wife Georgine Carnes; three children: Becky Todd and her husband David of Quimby, Iowa; Steve Carnes of Adel, Iowa; Scott Carnes and his wife Mary of Cherokee, Iowa; 6 grandchildren: Jennifer (Kyle) Schimmer of Galva, Iowa; Terri (Orin) Cheever of Holstein, Iowa; Matthew (Jessica) Todd of Cleghorn, Iowa; Sarah Carnes of Minneapolis, Minnesota; Katie Carnes of Cherokee, Iowa; Erica Carnes of Des Moines, Iowa; 6 great grandchildren: Jacob, Elizabeth & Caleb Schimmer; Brianna & Logan Cheever; Gracie Todd; brother: Bob Carnes and his wife Dorothy of Pierson, Iowa; brother in law: Bob Bowen of Ida Grove, Iowa; sister in law: Virginia Carnes of Oak Creek, Wisconsin.
