Obituary

JANICE C. NELSON, 82 , of Cherokee, Iowa passed away on Monday, August 1, 2022 at Sanford USD Med Center in Sioux Falls, South Dakota.

Memorial services will be held on Monday, August 15, 2022 at 10:30 a.m. at St. Paul's United Methodist Church.  Pastor Michael Agnew will officiate.  Burial will be in the Oak Hill Cemetery at Cherokee, Iowa.  Visitation will be on Sunday, August 14, 2022 from 12:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. with the family present from 2-4 p.m. at the Boothby Funeral Home in Cherokee, Iowa. Janice was born on September 16, 1939 at Melvin, Iowa to LeRoy W. and Vivian (Muilenburg) Walker.  She attended Melvin Schools graduating in 1957.  She married Lee Bernard Nelson on January 31, 1961 at the Methodist Church in Melvin, Iowa.  She attended Iowa Central Community College and graduated with her R.N. She worked at the Cherokee M.H.I. for 35 years until her retirement on November 1, 1996.

She was a member of St. Paul's United Methodist Church in Cherokee, Iowa.

When she was younger she enjoyed playing volleyball every other Thursday night in Cherokee.  She loved reading, flowers, gardening, traveling to many places in Europe and Turkey.  Janice loved her cats.

She was preceded in death by her parents LeRoy in 1996 and Vivian in 2008; husband, Lee in 2020; sister and brother-in-law, Joan (Paul) Helmers, and sister Mary Steinmetz.

Survivors include her sons, David Lee Nelson of Cherokee, Iowa and Dr. Daniel LeRoy Nelson and his wife Maria and their children Enrico and Elisha of Wisconsin; dear friends Vickie and Marvin Wieck and their children, Kyler,  Kennard, and Kendra of  Brooklyn, Iowa; brother Lionel "Butch"  (Theresa) Walker of Sioux City, Iowa; sister Cynthia (Joseph) Armstrong of Georgia; aunt Judy Peters of Sibley, Iowa.  Janice is also survived by a very special young friend and neighbor, Amara Connor.
