Obituary

Joan M. Forcier, 84, of Cherokee, Iowa, reached the end of her earthly adventure and started her heavenly adventure on October 2nd, 2023. Her son, Jeff Forcier, held her hand as she passed. She was surrounded by the love and comfort of family in her final days. In recent years, she experienced some mobility issues, but she never let that stop her from living life to the fullest and having fun. Joan continued making jokes and spreading laughter until the end.

We will miss her dearly and are deeply saddened by her loss but are celebrating the wonderful and full life she lived. Her visitation will be held at Boothby Funeral Home in Cherokee, IA at 1:30pm on Saturday, October 7, 2023 with funeral service to follow at 2:30 p.m.  Burial will follow services and will be in the Oak Hill Cemetery at Cherokee, Iowa.

Joan was born and adopted on February 18th, 1939 by her parents Howard and Sophia Russell in Cherokee, Iowa. After graduating from Washington High School in 1957, she would attend Mankato Commercial College and room with her lifelong friends Joanne, Lorraine, and Eleanor in Minneapolis. Joan met her husband, James Forcier, and would spend the next 64 years together. Together, they had four beautiful children, Jeff, Scott, Michael, and Brian. Joan worked at Wilson Foods during this time before starting her 25-year career with Mid-Sioux in Cherokee, IA. Joan's career at Mid-Sioux was dedicated to helping those in need in the community with food, clothing, shelter, and transportation among other things. Anything that anyone needed, she would find a way.  Joan cared deeply about others and her impact on the community and those she crossed paths with is profound.  Joan retired from Mid-Sioux as the Outreach Director on August 31st, 2012.

Joan adored cardinals and had many beautiful cardinal pieces as well as antique hand-painted lamps in her home that she collected over the years. Joan was an avid reader and supporter of the local library. Her favorite ice cream was Cherry Nut. She enjoyed spending time with friends and family listening to old country music and viewing birds out of her living room window. She had several pets including goldfish and cats over her 84 years that she cared for deeply. Her cat Dude slept in bed with them every night. Joan enjoyed going to the park in Cherokee and feeding the ducks. She had a wealth of knowledge on many topics and an adventurous spirit. Joan would attend every high school reunion for many decades and enjoyed meeting her friends for lunch regularly. Her friends and family enjoyed visiting Joan and listening to her many stories as she was a natural storyteller. Joan often said "wooh!" She loved getting her hair done at the local beauty parlor. Joan was a spiritual woman who enjoyed meeting with mediums, Ouija boards and ended her phone calls letting the recipient know she would be praying for them and their loved ones.

Some of the greatest life lessons learned from Joan's time on earth. Is there something you've always wanted to do? Do it! Love and help others. Spread laughter, kindness, and positive words. Live life to the fullest and have grand adventures.

Joan is preceded in death by her parents Howard Russell and Sophia Russell, her Aunt Vera, her son Brian Forcier, one of her best friends Fran Russell, and her brother Johnny Russell.
