JOHN J. HARE JR. 71, of Cherokee, Iowa passed away Wednesday evening, October 2, 2019 at Mercy One in Sioux City, Iowa.
Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, October 8 th , at 10:30 a.m. at the Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Cherokee, Iowa. Pastor Jean Morse will officiate. Burial will be in the Oak Hill Cemetery at Cherokee, Iowa with military rites at the graveside by L.A. Wescott Post #2253 of the V.F.W. and the Cherokee American Legion. Visitation will be on Monday from 3 p.m. until 7 p.m. with the family present from 5 p.m. until 7 p.m. at the Boothby Funeral Home in Cherokee, Iowa. John was born on November 24, 1947 at Mapleton, Iowa to John & Mamie (Davis) Hare. He graduated from Schaller High School in 1966. He served in the U.S. Army as a Corporal with the 25 th Infantry Division during the Vietnam War from October of 1967 until October of 1969 when he was honorably discharged. He was married to Alice Wimmer on October 11, 1969 at Danbury, Iowa.
John had worked as a meter reader for Iowa Electric Light & Power in Cherokee for several years. He had been Head Custodian at The Grotto in West Bend, Cleghorn High School and Nemaha Schools. He enjoyed WWE Wrestling, watching TV, cars, motorcycles, dining out; he especially enjoyed spending time with his kids and grandchildren. He had been a resident of the Cherokee area most of his adult life.
He was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters and one brother; Sandy Schmidt, Cathy Culver and infant brother Charles Hare.
He is survived by his four children: Bill (Bridgette) Hare of Ames, Iowa; Tammy (Blaine) Mahler of Cherokee, Iowa; Rob (Cat) Hare of Cherokee, Iowa; Scott Hare of Cherokee, Iowa; 11 grandchildren; one brother: Gary (Brenda) Hare of Cedar Rapids, Iowa.
