Obituary

JOHN C.  VEENCAMP , 95, of Cherokee, Iowa, passed away Wednesday evening, August 21, 2019 at Care Initiatives (Cherokee Specialty Care) in Cherokee, Iowa.

Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, August 28 th , at 2 p.m. at the Memorial Presbyterian Church in Cherokee, Iowa. Rev. Eric Wright will officiate. Burial will be in the Good Hope Cemetery at rural Cherokee, Iowa with military rites by L.A. Wescott Post #2253 of the V.F.W. and the Cherokee American Legion. Visitation will be on Wednesday from 12:30 p.m. until service time at the church. The Boothby Funeral Home in Cherokee, Iowa is in charge of the arrangements. John was born on March 6, 1924, at Sioux Center, Iowa to Paul and Winnie (DeGroot) Veencamp. He graduated from Sioux Center High School in 1941. He served in the U.S. Army (66 th Infantry Division) during WW II from 1943 until 1946. John lived in Sioux Center until 1949 when he was married to Betty Evonne Anderson on June 26, 1949 at Aurelia, Iowa.  To this union three children were born; Deborah, Darrell, and David. They lived in Cherokee until moving to Storm Lake in 1963, where they lived until 1979.  Betty passed away on March 15, 1997. John was later married to Patricia Ellis on June 11, 1999 at Cherokee, Iowa

John had worked as Service Manager and mechanic at Peterson Motors in Cherokee and Storm Lake from 1963 until 1967. He went to work for Wilson Foods in Cherokee from 1967 until his retirement from Continental Deli in 1986.

He was a member of the Memorial Presbyterian Church, Cherokee and Storm Lake Barbershop Quartet, the V.F.W., Little Sioux Wildlife Association, was a Boy Scout leader in his younger years. He enjoyed fishing, coin and stamp collecting, and having coffee with his buddies at the Family Table.

He was preceded in death by his parents his first wife Betty, brother Willard Veencamp, sister Carol Bastemeyer, and a step-daughter Melinda (Ellis) Vancenbrock.

He is survived by his wife Patricia of Cherokee, Iowa; three children: Deborah and her husband Rev. Dan Safarik of Lincoln, Nebraska; Darrell Veencamp and his wife Yvonne of Cherokee, Iowa; Rev. David Veencamp and his wife Denise of Madrid, Iowa; 13 grandchildren: Jenny (David) Weisser, Laura Safarik (Mike Fryda), Katie (Tyler) Ham, Paul Safarik, Aaron Veencamp, John (Alicia) Veencamp, Joel, Kristen, and Ryan Veencamp, Misty Bushlow, Stephanie, Ashley, and Sean Jenness; 7 great grandchildren; sister-in-law Carole Nilsson of Owatonna, Minnesota; brother-in-law Norm Bastemeyer of Clive, Iowa.
