John "Nick" Williams, 63, formerly of Cherokee and Spirit Lake Iowa, passed away Friday morning, April 10, 2015 in Minneapolis, MN at the Good Samaritan Society Specialty Care Community.
Funeral services will be held on Friday, April 17th, at 10:30 a.m. at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Cherokee, Iowa. Father Daniel Guenther will officiate. Burial will be in the Oak Hill Cemetery at Cherokee. Visitation will be on Friday morning from 9 a.m. until 10 a.m. at the Boothby Funeral Home in Cherokee with the family present at that time. Nick passed away after a long term struggle with complications resulting from a brain tumor that developed while he was serving in the United States Air Force. Nick was a graduate of Washington High School in Cherokee in 1969 and was attending the University of Iowa when he enlisted in the Air Force in 1973.
Nick was born in Cherokee on April 30, 1951 to John and Mary Williams. He lived in Cherokee until 1956 when his family moved to San Diego California where he lived until 1963 when he returned to Cherokee and he attended Wilson Junior High School and later Washington High School. After graduation he attended the University of Iowa until he enlisted in the United States Air Force in1973. Nick was stationed at Davis-Monthan AFB near Tucson, Arizona assigned to the missile launch teams in the under ground silos. During Nick's service he developed a brain tumor and was surgically treated at the Veteran Administration Hospitals in Iowa City and Minneapolis. Since that time Nick had been under the care of the VA as a disabled veteran. After leaving the Air Force, Nick resided in Spirit Lake, Iowa and despite his disability he traveled extensively with the Golden Adventure Club and was very active with his family. He was especially close to his 9 nephews and 1 niece. Nick had been a physics major at the University of Iowa and remained interested in science and science fiction throughout his life.
Nick had been preceded in death by his mother, Mary (Kledis) Williams.
He is survived by his father, John Williams, of San Diego, California, his brother Doug (Margo) of Minneapolis, MN, brother Michael (Ilse) of Sedalia, CO, sister Chris (Mitch) Morey of Minneapolis, MN and brother Greg (Roberta) Williams of Okoboji, IA, nephews Doug Williams (Therese) New York, NY, James "Jay" Williams (Jessica), Golden, CO, Justin Williams, Denver, CO, Steven (Jenessa) Schwartz, Minneapolis, MN, Nick Williams, Houston, TX, Alex Williams, St. Paul, MN, William Morey, Minneapolis, MN, Greg Morey, Minneapolis, MN, Spencer Williams, Minneapolis MN, and niece, Natalie Williams, Minneapolis, MN. Nick is also survived by his beloved cousins from the Kledis and Sease family originally of Cherokee and Fort Dodge, IA and of the extended Williams family cousins in California and Iowa. He is also survived by 2 great-nephews, Matt and Thurston, and 4 great-nieces Margaret, Morgan, Isabella and Charlotte.
