Obituary

JOYCE ELAINE  PHIPPS  PYLE, 89, of Cherokee, Iowa, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, and friend went to be with her Lord on Monday morning, April 30, 2018.

Funeral services will be held on Friday, May 4 th at 10:30 a.m. at the St. Paul's United Methodist Church in Cherokee, Iowa. Rev. Cris Decious will officiate. Burial will be in the Oak Hill Cemetery at Cherokee, Iowa. There will be a family prayer service at 10:15 a.m. at the church on Friday. Visitation will be on Thursday from 2 p.m. until 8 p.m. with the family present from 5 p.m. until 8 p.m. at the Boothby Funeral Home in Cherokee, Iowa. In lieu of flowers the family requests memorials to the St. Paul's United Methodist Church. Online condolences can be left at www.boothbyfuneral.com

Joyce was born October 6, 1928 to Albert & Amy (Bainbridge) Woltman. She went to Afton Country School for 8 years, Aurelia High School for 2 years, graduating from Cherokee High School in 1946. After graduation she began working as a telephone operator. She was married to George A. Phipps on September 19, 1948 at Cherokee, Iowa. They were blessed with three sons: Neil, Dana and Brad. Together they continued the Phipps family farm established in 1881. Following George's death, Joyce was blessed to marry Virgil Pyle on November 20, 2001.

Joyce loved her family; was a faithful servant of the Lord, a wonderful friend, church member, and neighbor. She enjoyed reading, playing cards, antiques, and flowers.

Joyce was a longtime member of the St. Paul's United Methodist Church where she stayed active in many ways, including U.M.W., Joy Circle, Trustees, Memorial Committee, Renovation Committee, Missions, Prayer Chain, and Funeral Committee. She had also been active in her community with P.E.O., Girls 4-H leader, Meals on Wheels, Cherokee County Archives, Election Worker, Red Cross (Lifetime member), Farmers Home Administration Board, Cherokee County Extension Council, Afton Township Clerk, New Cherokee Middle School Planning Committee, and Women's Farm Bureau.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband George on November 4, 2000, sister Genevieve (George) Steig, brother Wayne (Eulaila) Woltman, sister-in-law Ursula Woltman.

She is survived by her husband Virgil of Cherokee, Iowa; her family: Neil (Jodi) Phipps of Cherokee, Iowa; Dana (Pandora) Phipps of Cherokee, Iowa; Brad (Diane) Phipps of Cherokee, Iowa; Mike (Hazel) Pyle of Bradford, Vermont; Terry Pyle of Elizabeth, Colorado; Vicki (Kirby) Gilson of Urbandale, Iowa; Denny (Mindy) Pyle of Lakeside, Iowa; Shelly (Charlie) Green of Wichita, Kansas; 25 grandchildren: Jamie (Chris) Sosnowski, Adam Phipps (fiancé Heather), Taylor (Lindsay) Phipps, Jordan Phipps, Kelly (Eric) Lundell, Ryan (Lauren) Phipps, Sam Phipps, Jenna (Nick) Sievers, Josh (Lisa) Niemeier, Matt (Kim) Niemeier, Dan (Leah) Niemeier, Gabe Pyle, Luke (Gretchen) Pyle, Jana (Matt) Utesch, Tera (Tyler) Howe, Calvin Pyle, Joel (Indy) Gilson, Courtney Gilson, Chad Gilson, Nicole Gilson, Ty Pyle, Landon Green, Colin Green, Whitney Green, Haley Green; 21 great grandchildren: Addison, Ariah, Trindon, Carson, Brynn, Lena, Mira, Piper, Jovie, Landon, Taylor, Caleb, Gavin, Gracelyn, Anna, Jaylee, Colten, Cooper, Ellie, Merrik, and Tatum; one brother: Gary (Bev) Woltman of Arnolds Park, Iowa; nieces, nephews, cousins and a host of friends.
