JOYCE L. WOODS , 91, of Cherokee, Iowa, passed away Tuesday morning, November 24, 2020 in the Cherokee Specialty Care.
Memorial services will be on Saturday, May 22, 2021 at 10:30 a.m. at the Boothby Funeral Home in Cherokee, Iowa. Burial of the cremains will be made in the Oak Hill Cemetery. Joyce was born on May 28, 1929 in Toledo, Ohio to Rollin K. and Loraine (Wartchow) Stonebrook. She moved to Cherokee in 1958 to be near family while raising her three children, David, Donald, and Diane. Joyce worked as a psychiatric aide at the M.H. I. from 1958 to 1966. She found it to be challenging and rewarding work. In August 1966, she purchased Velma's Shop later changing the name to Joyce's Shoppe. She closed the shop in 2002 and retired. She loved her time as a business owner and serving the community of Cherokee and the surrounding area.
She joined the Memorial Presbyterian Church in 1960. Joyce's faith in God was very important to her not only for herself but for her children. After serving on several church boards, she was ordained as an Elder on January 31, 1982. She taught Sunday School and Mid-week youth activities. She served as a Deacon, Trustee, a member of the Memorial Committee, Stephen Ministries, and moderator of Presbyterian Women.
In 1974, she was initiated as a member of P.E.O. She was a past long time member of the Cherokee Chamber of Commerce. She was involved in B.P. W., serving as President from 1980 to 1982.
Joyce was an avid sports fan. She loved cheering on her Iowa Hawkeyes and the Cherokee Braves.
She loved her family and friends and cherished the memories she shared with all of them.
Joyce was preceded in death by her parents, her son Donald, her granddaughter Kerry Woods, her sister Ann Demma, and brother-in-law Harley Triggs.
She is survived by her son David (Cheryl) Woods of Sparks, Nevada, her daughter Diane (Dennis) Julius of Storm Lake, Iowa, her sister Susan Triggs of Ankeny, Iowa, seven grandchildren, Andrew Woods of Salt Lake City, Utah, Amanda Woods of Salt Lake City, Utah, Nathan Woods of Sparks, Nevada, James (Michelle) Julius of Grimes, Iowa, Janel (Timothy) McFarland of Spencer, Iowa, Beth (Brenton) Degroote of Corwith, Iowa and Eric Woods of Minneapolis, Minnesota, fifteen great grandchildren, several nieces, nephews, and many dear friends.
