KENNETH A. KUHNES, 88, of Cherokee and former long time Cleghorn resident, passed away Monday, April 25, 2011 at Cherokee Regional Medical Center.
Memorial services will be held on Saturday, June 25, 2011 at 3 p.m. at the Alta Community Center. Jim Miller will officiate. The Boothby Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements. On line condolences may be left at www.boothbyfuneral.com
Kenneth Arthur Kuhnes was born September 7, 1922 at Lake Andes, South Dakota to Arthur E. Kuhnes and Helen E. (Novotny) Kuhnes. He attended country schools in the Mitchell, S.D. area and graduated from high school at Plano, South Dakota. He was married to Carol Lucinda Green on September 27, 1948 in Nashua, Iowa. He had lived in Mitchell, SD and then in Cleghorn for 39 years, before moving to Cherokee. Kenneth farmed with his Dad and as a share cropper before moving to the Cleghorn area in March of 1961, where he worked as a farm hand and for the Cleghorn Cooperative Elevator. He also worked for Wilson Foods in Cherokee for 17 1/2 years. He did garden tilling and lawn mowing with his 140 John Deere garden tractor for 30 years. He was one of Jehovah's Witnesses. He loved gardening, reading, and Big Band music. He especially enjoyed his religion and his large family.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Carol on October 18, 1999, a daughter Dawn Marie, a daughter-in-law Charlotte Kuhnes on February 11, 2011; 3 sisters Mary Jane Kuhnes, Pearl Lorraine Waybright and her husband James and Geneva Bauer; 3 brothers-in-law Robert W. Green and his wife Frances, Lorin Green and his wife Esther and Roger Green; a sister- in-law Eleanor (Green) Phinney and her husband Norman.
He is survived by his eight children and their spouses: Marlene & Alan Johnson of Cherokee, Iowa; Kevin & Barbara Kuhnes of Cleghorn, Iowa; Dwight & Vickie Kuhnes of Storm Lake, Iowa; Maynard Kuhnes of Storm Lake, Iowa; Jeanine & Timothy Morrow of Storm Lake, Iowa; Lorna & Brent Lawrey of Meriden, Iowa; Melanie & Michael Tucker of Cherokee, Iowa; Anita & Tal Steig of Sutherland, Iowa; 14 grandsons, 14 granddaughters; 16 great grandchildren; a brother-in-law Paul Bauer of Sioux Center, Iowa; and a sister-in-law Neoma Green of Hill City, SD.
