Ken was born on August 7, 1941, to Merle and Irene (Bailey) Slater at Guthrie Center, Iowa.  He graduated from Rock Valley Community Schools in 1958.  Ken attended Augustana College in Sioux Falls for a year and played football there. Ken was a hard worker and put himself through college by doing various jobs and enlisting in the Iowa National Guard at Sheldon, Iowa where he earned the rank of Sergeant. He transferred to Northwestern College in Orange City after his enlistment and played football and became a lifelong fan of the Red Raiders. He graduated from Northwestern with a BA in Math Education in 1964.

Ken was united in marriage on December 26, 1965, to Diane Tyler at Sioux Falls, South Dakota; together they were blessed with three children.  He began his teaching career at Boyden-Hull as a math teacher and coach from 1964 until 1968. While he was teaching in Hull, he enrolled in summer classes at Colorado State University in Greeley, Colorado. He earned his master's degree in Educational Leadership and upon completion, he accepted a job as a high school principal in Pomeroy in 1968. In 1973, he accepted a job as a high school principal in Holstein and served there from 1973 to 1978.  He also continued his summer classes in Colorado and earned his specialist degree in Educational Leadership.  He then turned his attention to serving people through business as an insurance agent.

Ken and his family moved to Cherokee in 1978, where he owned and operated Ken Slater Insurance Agency. Together with his wife, Diane, they grew their business including a hobby business preparing taxes for his loyal customers.  Ken sold his agency and retired on December 31, 2016.

Ken was a member of St. Paul's United Methodist Church in Cherokee, Iowa.  He served on many of the different church groups and boards, assisting wherever he was needed. He loved and had pride in his community of Cherokee, serving the community in many ways.  He was a Cherokee City Councilman for 16 years, officiated countless Cherokee junior high and junior varsity football games, served on the Cherokee County Landfill Board, and was a youth sports coach.  Ken was an Iowa High School Association football official for an amazing 52 years.  He was a 43-year member and Past Master of Speculative Lodge #307 A.F. & A.M., of which he enjoyed being a Mason and helping with the lodge breakfasts.

Ken was a man who did things the right way. He was studious, focused, and hardworking. He instilled those values in his family in many ways including athletics. He was a self-taught golfer and became an avid player. He then shared his passion for the game with his children. They enjoyed playing together at Cherokee Country Club and practicing on the nearby M.H.I. grounds.  He was a true family man and enjoyed spending time with family and especially watching his grandchildren in their sporting events and activities.
