KERMIT T. HAZEN, 97, of Cherokee, Iowa, formerly of Cleghorn, Iowa, passed away Wednesday afternoon, August 10, 2011, in the Cherokee Regional Medical Center.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, August 13th, at 10:30 a.m. at the First Church of Christ in Cherokee. Pastor Tom Lewis will officiate. Burial will be in the Marcus-Amherst Cemetery at Marcus, Iowa. There will be a family prayer service at 10:15 a.m. at the church on Saturday. Visitation will be on Friday from 1 p.m. until 9 p.m. with the family present from

Kermit was born on June 14, 1914 on a farm near Remsen, Iowa to Louis T. & Deborah (Means) Hazen. He attended Meadow #1 School and graduated from Marcus High School in 1932. He attended Real Estate School in Centerville, Iowa and Sales Training Course in Libertyville, Illinois. He was a bank teller at Mutual National Bank in Chicago. While in Chicago he met his future wife Kathryn Hlad. They were united in marriage on June 5, 1943 at the Lawndale Baptist Church in Chicago. In the fall of 1943 they returned to Iowa. He farmed near Cleghorn for 25 years and also enjoyed working with the different livestock on the farm. In 1971 he moved to Corydon, Iowa to farm and obtained his Real Estate license while in Corydon. He also worked for Wayne Feed Co. and as a real estate agent for Decatur Corp. in Corydon. He retired on
March 23, 1990. He was a member of the First Church of Christ in Cherokee, former member of the Christian Church in Loami, Illinois where he was an Elder and had also been active in the Christian Church in Corydon and Cleghorn. He was a member of the Lions Club at Corydon, Iowa. Kermit collected coins, pens and pencils, enjoyed woodworking, all sports, especially football, and was an avid reader.
He was preceded in death by his parents; 5 brothers: Maurice, Wayne, Vernon, Robert & Philip; 5 sisters: Harriet French, Ruth Hazen, Grace Dorr, Janet Whitworth, & Gertrude Mitchell.
Kermit is survived by his wife Kathryn of 68 years of Cherokee, Iowa; his three children: Rodney Hazen of Dusseldorf, Germany; Joyce Hazen of Omaha, Nebraska; David Hazen of Springfield, Illinois; two grandchildren: Michelle Hazen of Pleasant Plains, Illinois & Renee Hazen of Carbondale, Illinois; two great grandchildren: Madeline Grace Bryant & Brody David Bryant both of Pleasant Plains, Illinois; a sister Connie Malloy of Sioux City, Iowa; a brother-in-law Jim Whitworth of Wichita, Kansas also many nieces & nephews.
