LARRY ALLAN JOHNSON, 76, of Spencer, Iowa, passed away Wednesday morning, February 11, 2015 in the Cherokee Villa Nursing & Rehab Center.
Larry was born on August 24, 1938 at Bigelow, Nobles County, Minnesota to Vernon & Jessie (Engelkes) Johnson. He attended Bigelow grade school and graduated from Worthington High School in 1956. He then enlisted in the U.S. Navy in August of 1956. He was married to Rieko Sagara in 1967 in Sasebo, Japan. He served in the Navy for 22 years, being discharged as a Machinists Mate 1st Class in January of 1978. After retiring, he joined the Merchant Marines and sailed the Indian Ocean, and also worked for the Naval Base in Sasebo, Japan. He lived in Sasebo for 45 years, until moving to Hawaii in 2011. He lived in Hawaii until 2013, when he moved to Spencer, Iowa to be near his siblings. He was a member of the American Legion and the V.F.W.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Rieko on July 9, 2004, and two sisters Marlene and Marcella Johnson.
He is survived by one daughter: Joyce (Bobby) Patton of Ewa Beach, Hawaii; two grandchildren and two great grandchildren: Sheena (Wes) Pacheco and their children Isabella & Piper, and Breanne Patton all of Ewa Beach, Hawaii; 2 brothers and 2 sisters: Gerald (Katy) Johnson of Spencer, Iowa; Dwight Johnson of Pryor, Oklahoma; Lori (Loren) Bosma of Sibley, Iowa; Valerie (John) Janssen of Sibley, Iowa; also several nieces and nephews.
It was Larry's wish to be cremated. There will be no services. The Boothby Funeral Home in Cherokee, Iowa is assisting the family with the arrangements. Online condolences can be left at www.boothbyfuneral.com
